JOB TITLE: Athletic Trainer
REPORTS TO: Athletic Director
SALARY: Based on State and Local Salary Schedule
STATUS: 12 months
SUMMARY:
The job Athletic Trainer was established for the purpose to ensure that players are ready to play, maintain proper diets, and receive proper treatment in the event of illness or injury by working with medical professionals, coaches and athletes. They evaluate the physical condition of athletes, assist with establishing dietary and fitness plans, and use their knowledge of sports-related injuries to diagnose and treat players.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
Appropriately assesses and examines athletes with varying diagnosis according to the Athletic Training scope of practice
Administers immediate first aid and care based on nature of injury, including follow-up with physician as appropriate
Schedules physical therapy and other treatment and/or other intervention as necessary and established and prescribed
Maintains confidentiality of athlete injury information. Attends department staff meetings as scheduled
Abides by and helps develop policy and procedures specific to both the athletic training room and the sports medicine/athletic health care program
Functions effectively and according to policy/training/expectations. Communicates reports in a concise, informative manner
Verifies physician order in accordance with established health care policy
Documents health care injury records and provides clear instructions for follow up
Maintains all medical and athletic training documentation in concise and legible manner
Maintains injury data information in proper order and reported in pre-assigned time frame
Prevention of Athletic Injuries: Design and Implement Prevention programs
Determination of an athlete's physical readiness to participate
Attends home and away athletic competitions
Any other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director/Principal
MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training and a valid state license or certification
Proven education or experience may be desired
Strong understanding of the challenges athletes face, proper nutrition, sports injuries, and treatment options
Understanding of first-aid treatments, massage, and physical therapy techniques and equipment
Detail-oriented, analytical, and attentive
Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, decision making, and communication skills
Current CPR card
No previous or current sanctions by federal payors (CMS, Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Champus/Tricare, etc…) or other payors inclusive of state workers compensation system
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of normal anatomical structure and function
Knowledge of physiological demand and response to exercise
Knowledge of nutritional demands of the athlete
Knowledge of contraindications and side effects of prescription and non-prescription medications
Knowledge of absorption, dissipation and transmission of energy of varying materials
Knowledge of legal requirements and rules of the athletic event. Implementation of pre-season, in-season and postseason strength and conditioning programs
Works confidently in crisis or emergency situations. Demonstrates knowledge of safety practices
Assesses athlete's status in response to treatment and modifies programs as appropriate
Applies treatment procedures and modalities in accordance with established indications and contraindications
Prepares athlete for treatment and insures comfort and safety of athletes
Instructs athlete in therapeutic exercise, and strength and conditioning programs
Informs athletes and families of important aspects of athlete's present condition, including concussion, wound care, first aid and follow-up care
Informs physician program manager of any necessary documentation or observable signs that need investigation
Meets criteria for certification as established in the National Athletic Trainers Association
Maintains educational readiness needs through CEU's
Maintains statistics and injury logs as established
Able to perform duties in an efficient and independent manner with minimal supervision
Willing to learn from the knowledge and experience of others
Willing to ask questions when not sure of the correct action to take
Can master new work routines and use new equipment without the need for repetitive instruction
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk and listen. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to fingers, handle, or feel: reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds or more at times.
