Position Information

Position Summary: The Athletic Director (AD) is the Chief Athletics Officer representing the athletics department.

This position provides oversight, guidance, and supervision for all aspects of an intercollegiate athletic sports program in accordance with HIU's mission and the guidelines set forth by the GSAC, NAIA, and other regulatory bodies. The AD develops a collaborative and productive partnership between the athletics department and academic affairs, student affairs, enrollment management, university relations, and other administrative units to advance the university's mission through Royals Athletics.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The Athletic Director (AD) supervises the Assistant Athletic Director(s), Sports Information Director (SID), athletic trainers, head and assistant coaches, graduate assistants, and other game operations personnel for all sports.

  • The AD recruits, manages, and develops coaching staff who field competitive teams, meet university benchmarks for student success, and promote a positive student athletic experience. The AD maintains an effective staff capable of meeting budget goals and administering effective operations.

  • The AD serves as a pastoral figure for athletic personnel ensuring that all hires are mission-aligned, models a faithful and committed Christian life, and encourages a program-wide culture of discipleship.

  • The AD will partner with the VPSA to proactively monitor and ensure that all key performance metrics are met or exceeded. The AD will review and manage the effectiveness of all athletics department personnel.

  • The AD represents the athletics program as a member of the Faculty Athletic Committee and ensures all student-athletes are held to high academic standards. The AD will work collaboratively regarding class scheduling and academic eligibility.

  • The AD will build strong relationships with local, regional, and statewide partners to aid recruitment, extend HIU's brand, and advance HIU's mission.

  • The AD will nurture and support fundraising efforts for all sports and assist with the promotion and marketing efforts of the Athletic Department. The AD will be tasked with developing a robust booster club composed of supporting families and friends.

  • The AD will work with coaches to secure officials; finalize schedules; approve all rentals, facility leases, and other contracts; review and approve travel arrangements; and other responsibilities necessary for effective game management and operations.

  • The AD (and VPSA) will prepare annual budgets, approve all check requests and purchase orders, draft annual reports for GSAC and other regulatory bodies, and approve building reservations for all athletic and physical education facilities.

  • The AD maintains memberships in GSAC and NAIA, ensuring that HIU meets all conference guidelines and standards, and serves as chair of the Royal Athletic Association and the Athletic Director's Council.

  • The AD will travel and attend all meetings where institutional representation is needed. Additionally, the AD should expect significant travel to attend away games and matches, especially during the post-season.

Character: The candidate must demonstrate a vibrant Christian faith as evidenced by active involvement in a local church and must be willing and able to affirm and embody the Christian mission and values of the university as expressed through its Restoration heritage.

Education/Experience: The candidate must possess significant administrative and/or teaching experience, preferably in higher education, and an earned or in-progress master's degree in a relevant discipline from a regionally accredited college or university.

The ideal candidate will have a record of coaching success, a strong record of athletic administration, an understanding of laws that apply to intercollegiate athletics, and familiarity with Title IX. He/she must be able to maintain records and budget control for the department, work cooperatively and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment, operate well in a "busy" environment where multiple activities may occur simultaneously, and have strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Mental Demands: The ideal candidate will remain positive amid stressful situations, work well with people, express ideas clearly to staff and athletes, maintain confidence in abilities, and remain flexible.

Visual Demands: The ideal candidate should possess the visual ability to read hard copy and computer-generated reports including numbers, letters, and university publications. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and color vision as well as the ability to view computer monitors and read numbers for extended periods.

Physical Demands: The ideal candidate must be able to lift/move up to 60 pounds; Climbing stairs and walking to various offices on campus may be required.

Environment: HIU's Athletic Department is a very busy, team-oriented, fast-paced environment.

The AD must be able to maintain confidential information and maintain extensive contact with students, lenders, other outside agencies, faculty, and staff. The position may require some late hours and weekends.

Position Status: Exempt, full-time

Hiring Range: $80,000.00 - $100,000.00 Annually
