About the Department
The Matador Achievement Center (MAC) serves the academic needs of the 400+ NCAA Division I student-athletes of CSUN. The MAC works with CSUN's 19 Athletic teams who have the highest graduation rate of any department on campus. From recruiting visits through graduation, the MAC is proud to assist prospective and current student- athletes reach their academic goals.
Under general supervision, the Athletic Academic Advisor is responsible for providing academic advising for incoming and continuing student-athletes including: course selection, graduation planning, knowledge of campus policies and major requirements, etc. The incumbent monitors and reviews NCAA Academic Eligibility; provides academic support including Academic Specialist meetings, referrals to campus resources, etc.; collaborates with athletic administration, coaches, faculty, and staff; keeps student files updated with current documents; contributes to department collaboration and innovation; and performs other duties as assigned.
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a job-related field. Equivalent to two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.
A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience. Professional membership in National Advising and Athletic Advising communities, (NACADA, N4A, etc.) preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of Academic Advising for student-athletes as well as thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; the principles of individual and group behavior; individual counseling techniques; the ability to acquire such knowledge of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of NCAA academic criteria, rules, and regulations.
Ability to: identify complex situations accurately and seek support for a solution. The ability to advise students individually and in groups on student-related matters; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student groups, analyze and define the problem, and with support draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals; and operates standard office equipment and software including but not limited to Oracle PeopleSoft, EAB Campus, Jump Forward, and Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Outlook, and Excel).
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

The salary range for this classification is: $4179 - $5942 per month.
The anticipated HIRING MAX: $4179
HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday through Friday; will include some evenings and weekends.
TRAVEL: This position requires occasional travel.
REG: This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
This position is a sensitive position as designated by the CSU.
