Astrazeneca - UVA Postdoctoral Research Associate - Cardiovascular Functional Genomics

State Of Virginia Charlottesville , VA 22901

Posted 1 week ago

The Miller Laboratory at the University of Virginia seeks a talented postdoctoral research associate with a background in a life sciences field to apply systems genomics approaches to investigate mechanisms of inherited cardiomyopathies. Available projects include the generation and computational analysis of single-nucleus (e.g., snATAC/snRNA-seq), and spatial (e.g., spatial transcriptomics, proteomics) omics datasets from healthy and diseased subjects of ancestrally diverse backgrounds.

The candidate will also contribute to functional genomic screens to validate discoveries in vitro and in vivo. The overall goals of this work are to contextualize rare and common genetic variation associated with cardiovascular diseases to inform early-stage detection and prevention. There will also be opportunities to classify common disease subtypes using machine learning approaches and identify clinically relevant targets/biomarkers for myocardial diseases.

This unique position is funded for 3 years through a partnership with AstraZeneca (Gaithersburg, MD), where the candidate will be exposed to a dynamic cross-functional training environment. At UVA the candidate will have access to a broad range of population genetic and genomic datasets through large-scale consortia projects, high performance computing resources, and will be exposed to a stimulating, multi-disciplinary and inclusive environment in the Center for Public Health Genomics (CPHG). This work will involve close collaborations with AstraZeneca scientists to broaden training in both data science and translational cardiovascular fields.

Minimum Requirements:

Candidates must have a PhD in a life sciences or quantitative field (required in hand by appointment start date).

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in statistics or genetics is desired, including proficiency in R, python (or other scripting languages). The successful candidate will also have a strong working knowledge of biomedical fields such as human genetics, molecular/cell biology, physiology etc. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required, as is the ability to work in a cross-functional team.

As part of the AZ-UVA postdoc mentoring program, the candidate will be encouraged to generate impactful publications, present in national and international scientific meetings, as well as participate in AZ networking and career development events.
