Reporting to the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs, this position will support and advance the Fairmont State University mission by serving as the lead staff member in the coordination, support, and oversight of the university assessment initiatives within academic affairs. The Director of Assurance of Learning position is essential in ensuring the continuous improvement of academic programs through systematic assessment of student learning outcomes and program effectiveness. The Director will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, institutional committees, and academic leadership to foster a shared governance approach for the fulfillment of the duties and responsibilities related to this position.

  • Collaborate with senior level administrators in the development and implementation of a comprehensive plan for the assessment of student learning outcomes across academic programs.

  • Ensure alignment of assessment activities with institutional goals, accreditation standards, and best practices.

  • Provide leadership, support, and guidance to faculty and staff in designing, conducting, and interpreting assessment activities.

  • Serve as the Chair and coordinate activities of the Assurance of Learning Council as set forth in the institution's assessment plan; serve as a member of the Program Review Council and Curriculum Committee.

  • Organize and lead professional development and training sessions on assessment practices and methods on campus.

  • Support faculty and staff in developing assessment tools and techniques to enhance teaching and learning.

  • Work closely with academic departments, faculty committees, and administrative units to promote and support assessment activities.

  • Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and the Center for Teaching & Learning Innovation to ensure cohesive and integrated assessment practices and plan.

  • Create and maintain a repository of resources to support assessment efforts on campus, including templates, guides, and best practices.

  • Provide online and print materials to assist faculty and staff in implementing effective course and program assessment strategies.

  • Work closely with academic departments, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, the Center for Teaching Learning & Innovation, and administrative units to promote and support assessment activities and related training and professional development.

  • Communicate assessment results and their implications to various stakeholders in a clear and effective manner.

  • Develop, foster, and nurture relationships with faculty, staff and students within the institution to cultivate a culture of assessment and program improvement.

  • As a member of the Program Review Council, periodically evaluate program learning outcome assessment plans.

  • Collaborate with academic departments to develop and implement program improvement action plans (where appropriate) based on program assessment findings.

  • Serve as a point person for collecting and reporting data relative to student learning outcomes and program effectiveness.

  • Serve as a Watermark Planning and Self Study systems administrator and contact.

  • Provide assessment reports to internal and external stakeholders, particularly in support of higher learning commission accreditation requirements and meeting expectations for continuous improvement.

  • Use learning outcome assessment data to identify and communicate strengths, weaknesses and areas of improvement within academic programs.

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the university's strategic plan, particularly in areas related to learning outcome assessment, academic quality, and student success.

  • Participate in institutional planning and policy development related to curriculum, assessment and accreditation.

Minimum Required Education

  • Master's degree in a field or discipline, doctoral degree preferred.

Minimum Expectations

  • Five years of higher education teaching experience as a tenured or tenure track faculty member.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Work-related evidence or current knowledge and ability to effectively develop and execute the duties of this position.

  • Experience with assessment and/or accreditation processes and standards.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

  • Ability to self-manage, work independently, prioritize tasks, organize work, and complete a variety of projects and priorities simultaneously.

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with academic leadership, faculty members, and colleagues.

  • Ability to facilitate the work of others through institutional committees, councils, and/or academic units.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience in directing assessment initiatives.

  • Evaluating academic programs.

  • Faculty development.

  • Teaching-learning assessment.

  • Project evaluation.

Special Conditions

  • This position will be a split-position with intention of engaging a full-time faculty member with course-release to half-time load with an annual stipend to augment the directorship.

  • This position is a 12-month; 3-year term; at-will opportunity.

  • Stipend will be spread over 26 pays each year. $20,000 stipend each year.
