SMA (Student Medical Assistant) The student medical assistant program is a paid opportunity allowing medical assistant students who are enrolled in an approved program, to work under the direction of Medical Group of the Carolinas to provide direct care to patients. Associates will gain the experience needed to launch their medical assisting career while working with our organization. This position will give you the opportunity to learn and network with hiring leaders in our medical practices and hospital system. What you will need # High school graduate or equivalent # Must be enrolled in an approved medical assisting program (USC or Clemson) # Must complete an interview process Experience No prior experience needed License/registration/certifications BLS will be obtained during training What to expect Gain valuable experience and knowledge as a medical assistant student while building relationships with other medical assistants working in medical practices. A minimum requirement is working 12 hours per week with a minimum of 4 hours per day, maximum of 32 hours per week or 64 per pay period, while completing your approved curriculum. Overtime is not permitted. You will obtain hands-on experience in primary care and specialty offices. Specialty offices will be chosen depending on your areas of interest and availability. Core job responsibilities Measure and record vital signs. Obtain patient medical history and chief complaint. Accurate documentation within the patient#s chart. Prepare exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments and supplies. Prepare and maintain supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization of equipment. Assist with scheduling of tests and treatments. Prepare patient for examination. Assist the provider with exams and minor office procedures. Adhere to and practice appropriate infection control policies and procedures. Screens, manages, and follows up telephone messages from patients, referrals, and pharmacies. Prepare and send prescriptions electronically per provider#s orders. Perform waived lab tests, EKGs, and administer injections. Basic first aid and wound care. Use CPR skills when required. Proper handling and disposal of biohazard waste according to state standards. Maintain OSHA requirements and practice OSHA standards. Perform accurate, legal, and ethical documentation always. Perform other duties as assigned. Must be in good physical condition and able to withstand the stress and demands of an active position. Manual dexterity, good eye/hand coordination and acceptable vision needed in daily work. Must have strong knowledge of organizational dynamics and have excellent communication/coaching skills. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, the public, and other agencies. Must be able to respond calmly and efficiently in crisis situations. Effective verbal and written communication skills based on the command of the English language. Must be able to perform the following functions: standing for long hours, walking, stooping, bending, sitting, pushing, pulling, and squatting. Must be able to lift 30+ lbs. to lift/move patients, equipment, and/or supplies utilized in the workplace. Adhering to the proper chain of command. Computer skills.
