JOB TITLE:

Assistant Professor in Wyoming and the American West

JOB PURPOSE:

The Department of History at the University of Wyoming invites outstanding applicants for a tenured track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor to the Philip Roberts Professorship in the History of Wyoming and the American West, beginning August 2025. We welcome candidates with proficiency in any time period or thematic specialty, broadly defined, whose expertise would strengthen the department.

The holder of this Professorship should be committed to an ambitious research agenda and active involvement in a dynamic department and both its undergraduate and M.A. program. The University of Wyoming is well positioned to support this position with resources such as the American Heritage Center (the largest repository west of the Mississippi), the Coe Library Special Collections, and strong connections to front-range institutions like the Buffalo Bill Cody Center of the West.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The faculty member will be responsible for teaching a 2:1 course load, including the survey class "Wyoming History" in fall and spring. The faculty member will also teach an undergraduate or graduate course in Western and/or Wyoming history. They will also have the opportunity to teach classes in their area of expertise.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

In addition, this faculty member will contribute to the Department of History's funded M.A. program by supervising M.A. students. Undergraduate career advising and departmental service are also expected.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in History at the time of the appointment.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The position provides generous support for faculty research, travel, and conferences, and has undertaken plans to devote its resources to an array of conferences, symposia, and new programs that will provide the holder of this Professorship with an opportunity to help shape its future.
