Classification Summary:

Coordinates NMSU system-wide efforts to accommodate the identified needs of students with disabilities. Develops, implements, and maintains programs that enhance the successful retention of students with disabilities and their NMSU system experience. Ensures services are in compliance with federal ADA law.

Classification Standard Duties:

Oversees a variety of accommodations, including but not limited to assistive technology, e-text/alternate formats, and complex accommodations. Reviews disability-related documentation, including psychoeducational, neuropsychological and medical reports to determine eligibility and to implement academic accommodations for students with disabilities.

Conducts Initial Interviews with new students to determine accommodations and access.

Manages a small caseload of students with disabilities, and consults with HR about employee accommodations, as needed.

Orients new students and advises faculty about the policies and procedures regarding the provision and implementation of accommodations and services.

Manage and supervise operational activities of accommodations and services.

Responsible for ensuring the department's timely delivery and effectiveness of disability accommodations for eligible students, including ensuring that policies and procedures related to accommodations reflect current best practices.

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency

Required Education:Bachelor's degree in a related field.; Required Experience:Four (4) years of professional experience related to the standard duties as outlined.; Equivalency:None; Required Certification/License:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE:Knowledge of applicable legislation, standards, policies and procedures within specialty area. Knowledge of community support services and funding agencies.

Knowledge of faculty and/or staff hiring procedures. Knowledge of financial/business analysis techniques. Knowledge of policies, programs and service delivery models for college student populations and, specifically, students with disabilities.

Knowledge of student support programs and services.; SKILLS:Employee development and performance management skills. Outstanding interpersonal and community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse community. Program planning and implementation skills.

Proposal and grant writing skills. Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management. Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.; ABILITIES:Ability to communicate and interact with officials at all levels of government. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.

Ability to develop and deliver presentations. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment. Ability to perform complex tasks and to prioritize multiple projects.

Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments. Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart information to a range of clientele and/or media sources.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Assists the "Disability Specialist" in conducting Initial Interviews with new students to determine accommodations and access.

Manages a small caseload of students with disabilities, and consults with HR about employee accommodations, as needed.

Orients new students and advises faculty about the policies and procedures regarding the provision and implementation of accommodations and services.

Manage and supervise operational activities of accommodations and services. Address the increase in student requests for ADA academic accommodations associated with COVID related concerns and overall increase in mental health diagnosis accommodations (anxiety, depression, PTSD). Assist with COVID testing compliance tracking and serve as a liaison with student health & student conduct.

To meet the challenge of developing an enforcement protocol and process to ensure the increased requests associated with ADA academic accommodations related to COVID vaccines and mask related concerns are met, this position will address the increase in requests for ADA academic accommodations associated with COVID related concerns and overall increase in mental health diagnosis accommodations. This role will assist with COVID testing compliance tracking and serve as a liaison with student health & student conduct. Assists in conducting Initial Interviews with new students to determine accommodations and access.

Orients new students and advises faculty about the policies and procedures regarding the provision and implementation of accommodations and services.

Manage and supervise operational activities of accommodations and services.

Responsible for performing initial interviews of students seeking accommodations. They will meet with each student during an interview process and listen, ask questions to determine the appropriate sanctions for the student. Individual will then complete process and send out Letters of Accommodation to the faculty of said student.
