Davidson College is a recognized leader in undergraduate research, scholarship and creative work across our many academic disciplines. In the last five years, 55% of faculty grant applications have received external funding (including resubmissions), for a total of more than $11 million in external funding, including grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Our goal is to continue increasing the number of successful applications and total funding. Additionally, approximately 12% of students have participated in externally and internally funded undergraduate research over the past three years. The college distributes nearly $1 million to support student research projects each year. We are seeking a colleague who can build upon a solid foundation and support continuing efforts to increase the number of our faculty and students engaging in cutting-edge research.

The Assistant Dean for Research Development & Director of Sponsored Programs (ADRD/DSP) is responsible for the administration and oversight of externally- and internally-funded projects that support faculty development activities and the integration of research and scholarship into the College's academic program.

The ADRD/DSP leads the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) and supervises the Assistant Director/Pre-Award Manager and the Assistant Director/Post-Award Manager. The ADRD/DSP reports to the Senior Associate Dean of Faculty, is a member of the Faculty Development Team in Academic Affairs, and works closely with the Associate Director of Academic Administration for the implementation of internally-funded projects. The ADRD/DSP also partners with the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations for the implementation of institutional grants. OSP collaborates with faculty and staff on managing student research funding initiatives and maintaining the vitality of the Davidson summer research community.

The ADRD/DSP is the College's Authorized Organizational Representative (AOR) with delegated signature authority for externally sponsored projects and material transfer agreements (MTAs).

The ADRD/DSP is also the College's Research Integrity Officer (RIO) with responsibility for promoting and ensuring ethical conduct of research across the institution.

RESPONSIBILITIES STRATEGIC

  • Assists faculty in formulating strategies for being successful in a competitive funding environment to support their research, creative works, and scholarly goals.

  • In partnership with College Relations, participates in strategic planning and vision development to identify funding that supports initiatives in alignment with the College's strategic priorities.

  • Advises the Senior Associate Dean of Faculty and other campus leaders on approaches for securing opportunities and integrating funding trends with the College's academic priorities.

  • Facilitates faculty partnerships or collaborations with external entities for the benefit of the faculty member, students, and the institution.

  • Maintains relationships with donors for internally-funded programs, including the Abernethy Endowment Grant and Davidson Research Network (DRN).

  • Provides data, metrics and reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty, other College administrators and offices regarding faculty and student participation in summer research, outcomes, trends, and emerging needs.

ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Supervises the 4 staff members (Assistant Director/Pre-Award Manager, Assistant Director/Post-Award Manager, Grant Accounting Assistant, and Grants Coordinator) in the OSP which:

  • Provides support for all pre-award activities for external grants including identification of funding opportunities, proposal development, budget preparation, and grant submissions.

  • Provides post-award management for all externally- and internally-funded faculty, student, and institutional grants.

  • Administers a comprehensive compliance program which includes Human Subjects Protections (HSIRB), Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR), Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI), and Effort Reporting.

  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director/Post-Award Manager, provides oversight and/or support for internally-funded faculty and student research grant programs.

  • Convenes and co-chairs the Faculty Study & Research and Student Study & Research Committees which review proposals, set policies, and approve funding; serves on other internal funding committees such as the Abernethy Endowment Grant, Kemp Scholars, and the Davidson Research Network.

  • Submits annual reports and meeting minutes for FS&R and SS&R to the Faculty Executive Committee.

  • Helps coordinate on-campus summer student research programming and the annual Summer Research Symposium in the fall.

  • Publicizes internally-funded faculty and student research grant programs to the campus community

  • Works collaboratively with other offices on the Davidson Catalyst initiative that provides internal funding for high impact experiential learning (including the Dean Rusk International Studies Program, Center for Civic Engagement, and Education Abroad) for information sharing, coordinating activities such as grant-writing workshops for students, and coordinating funding.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters degree in a relevant field.

  • At least three years of experience in research administration, grant management, innovation management, sponsored programs, or related roles within higher education or research-intensive organizations.

  • Knowledge of federal regulations, compliance requirements, and ethical standards governing research, sponsored programs, and innovation activities.

  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of research, innovation, and sponsored programs.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders.

  • Record of successfully planning, managing budgets, and administering significant grants and contracts.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Doctoral degree in a relevant discipline. Experience working with both faculty and undergraduate students in a liberal arts college environment.
