We have an exceptional opportunity for a visionary leader to join our team and help shape the future of early childhood care and education. As Director of our Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Learning and Development, you will provide strategic vision and guidance for our renowned research, training, and community outreach programs.

The position is a full-time, 12-month Director/Administrative position. This position is eligible for appointment at the associate or full professor level and eligible for tenure. The successful candidate for this position will be committed to creating and leading an environment that acknowledges, encourages, respects, and celebrates all.

In this pivotal role, you will oversee all aspects of Center operations and help strengthen our impact across the region. You will inspire our dedicated staff in their work developing innovative curricula, conducting groundbreaking research studies, and training the next generation of early childhood professionals. With your leadership, we will continue establishing new community partnerships and exploring creative solutions to critical issues in early childhood.

The Center of Excellence in Early Childhood Learning and Development, part of the Clemmer College of Education and Human Development, is a highly accomplished institution in its 40th year. It receives partial funding from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and focuses on research, academic training, and model services for typically developing children and those at risk for developmental delays up to age 8 and their families. The Center has substantial external funding and provides support to faculty interested in early childhood learning and development.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current best practices in serving children with an age range between Birth to 3rd grade
  • Knowledge of general academic and research policies and curriculum issues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students within the college, university, community, and government constituencies.

  • Ability to maintain a strong personal research program of national and international importance.
  • Ability to recruit and involve faculty and graduate students in group research projects.

  • Ability to recruit outstanding faculty, visiting faculty, and graduate students.
  • Ability to oversee federal, state, and foundation grant projects.
  • Ability to provide models of technology integration in center-related projects.
  • Ability to provide appropriate mentorship to affiliate faculty and center staff.
  • Ability to engage in constructive problem-solving and to make sound decisions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with leadership of other academic and administrative units.
  • Ability to promote student success and faculty excellence in activities related to the center of excellence.
  • Ability to engage in constructive conflict management.
  • Ability to plan yearly budget.
  • Ability to participate in professional development activities.
  • Ability to present at international, national, regional, and state conferences.
  • Ability to maintain fiscal responsibility for the Center of Excellence in Early Childhood Learning and Development.
  • Ability to serve on various university committees and provide information concerning center activities.
  • Ability to review policies periodically and make changes as necessary.
  • Ability to supervise, lead, and manage staff.

Required Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate in Early Childhood, Education, Special Education, Psychology, or other related fields;
  • Meet qualifications to serve as an Associate or Full Professor
  • Experience working with/teaching in Birth to 3rd grade with children with and without disabilities and/or working with early childhood settings or k-12 education experience, and/or higher education;
  • Experience in teaching, research, and/or administration in a higher education setting;
  • A minimum of three years of increasingly responsible administrative experience with grant management (including administering budgets, leading educational programs, and/or leading units);
  • A minimum of two years of managerial and supervisory experience, (supervision experience relevant to graduate assistants, temporary employees, part-time employees, faculty of any classification, support staff, and professional staff).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in developing curricula and/or assessing programs;
  • Experience maintaining an active program of research and writing of competitive federal grant proposals and peer-reviewed publications as expected of the position.
