Position Title: Associate/Full Professor and Chair of Engineering

The Chair of Engineering will serve as the leader of the newly created Department of Engineering within Butler's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS). In this role, the Chair of Engineering will be responsible for providing strategic oversight and direction for the new department. This includes the creation and launching of Butler's first in-house engineering program and the three initial majors to be offered: Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Bioengineering. As Chair of Engineering, this faculty member will oversee the curriculum design for this program, the hiring and development of engineering faculty members, the formation of a department, and guide the growth and development of the Engineering program. The Engineering program at Butler will work to cultivate both the engineering and the liberal arts skills that produce desirably well-rounded professionals. The ideal candidate will have an innovative spirit and a desire to elevate the field of engineering through cutting-edge programs and pedagogies. This position will work directly with students and partner with the Butler enrollment team for an admissions and recruitment strategy. The teaching load while in the chair role is 12 hours per academic year (two 3-credit courses per semester).

Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Create and lead a strategic direction for engineering at Butler. This includes a plan for program development that supports the future of engineering.
  • Develop a strategy of innovative approaches to teaching and learning that will establish Butler as an innovative leader in engineering education.
  • Build and oversee the curricular components of the engineering program by providing leadership in and supervision of the development, implementation, and assessment of all aspects of the curricula in the program in collaboration with the curriculum committee. The curriculum shall be developed to specifically meet ABET accreditation requirements.
  • Hire, lead, mentor, and support engineering faculty members and support staff. Establish a collaborative team focused on innovative approaches to curriculum development and pedagogical approaches.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments in the college to support the needs and goals of engineering.
  • Oversee all aspects of assessment using data in a continuous and systematic process of evaluating the outcomes of the program that will lead to successful ABET accreditation.
  • Provide a welcoming and inclusive working and learning environment for all faculty, staff and students.
  • Engage in teaching, scholarship, and service activities consistent with the typical requirements of LAS faculty.

Requirements for the Position:

  • Evidence of leadership skills and abilities
  • Experience and educational background needed to design and teach courses in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Bioengineering
  • A strategy for effective teaching and mentoring undergraduate students with a variety of backgrounds, identities, and experiences
  • A record of achievement appropriate for appointment as Associate Professor or (Full) Professor

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in academic administration
  • An earned doctorate in engineering, engineering education, or a closely related field
  • Experience designing engineering curriculum
  • A record of scholarly achievement in their field
  • Evidence of engaging teaching at the undergraduate level
  • A pedagogical approach in line with emerging trends and innovations
  • Expertise in ABET accreditation policies and procedures
  • Experience building and growing academic programs
