Job Summary

The Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students (AVP/DOS) at Radford University is an advocate for students. Focusing on student well-being (including basic needs support), the AVP/DOS enhances a distinct student experience and promotes a supportive campus environment that will attract and retain a diverse student body.

The AVP/DOS must be an energetic, innovative, student-centered leader that develops, implements, assesses and evolves a broad range of accessible services and programs that will support students in their academic pursuits, campus life and civic and social responsibilities. The AVP/DOS engages directly with and in the daily lives of students. The AVP/DOS provides strategic visioning, leadership and administrative direction for the areas of Office of the Dean of Students, Military Resource Center, Office of Student Standards and Conduct, Center for Accessibility Services, Substance and Violence Education Services, and Student Counseling Services.

The AVP/DOS chairs the University's Threat Assessment Team and provides leadership for the Behavioral Consultation Team and processes for response to abhorrent behavior. The AVP/DOS also serves as primary advisor to the Student Government Association. A collaborative leader, the AVP/DOS partners with various stakeholders to advance a holistically oriented and healthy campus culture. The AVP/DOS is a member of the executive leadership team in Student Affairs and will assist the Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) in shaping the future of the Radford University student experience.

Required Qualifications

7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs administration in higher education and a master's degree in student affairs, higher education, or related field; a minimum of 3 years experience at the director-level or above for leading and administering student affairs programs and service departments; recruiting, hiring, training, mentoring, and supervising professional and support staff; managing complex projects and budgets; demonstrated strong working knowledge of higher education law, judicial policies/procedures, and crisis intervention/response; demonstrated record of effective work with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, parents/families and community members, experience in advising/mentoring student government and related organizations; excellent interpersonal, analytic, organizational, and communication skills; and excellent decision making skills.

Confirmed knowledge of computer and technical abilities with Microsoft, database, web and applicable software and technologies. Proven judgement; ability to promote community and high ethical standards among students. Ability to cultivate positive and collaborative relationships with various university constituencies and community partners.

Preferred Qualifications

A demonstrated record of initiating and advancing student retention efforts; sustaining organizational growth and change while fostering a collaborative work environment. Experience with parent and family programs. Experience with Student Affairs fundraising and grant writing,
