Job Description:

SUNY Broome is seeking qualified, dynamic candidates for the position of Associate Vice President of Student Development & Dean of Students (AVP/Dean). Reporting to the Vice President of Student Development & Chief Diversity Officer (VPSD/CDO), the AVP/Dean coordinates the administration of the Dean of Students Office for SUNY Broome, serves as an advocate for students, and shares information with students, colleagues, and other interested parties that promote student success, retention, and graduation. Working to create a culture of learning and engagement by applying student development theories and learning outcomes, the AVP/Dean provides strategic leadership and oversight to Student Life Departments and Programs: Students Rights and Responsibilities, Counseling Services, Health Services, Multicultural Affairs, Student Activities, the BC Child Center, and at-risk cohort intervention.

The incumbent also oversees student-related ADA Compliance efforts and serves as the Section 504 Compliance Officer. In addition, coordinates compliance regarding Civil Rights, Sexual Assault, and other issues in conjunction with appropriate College staff; leads campus diversity initiatives pertaining to student life, chairs and/or serves on the Campus Assessment Response and Evaluation (CARE) team, and organizes the nomination process for the annual SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence and other scholarship awards.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Supervision and direction of personnel, activities, and programs of the Dean of Students Department ensuring programs and activities that positively impact students' academic, personal, and social development.

  • Provides direction and leadership to: Dean of Students Office support staff, Director of the BC Center, Director of Student Activities and staff, Counseling Services, Health Services personnel, Students Rights and Responsibilities Program Coordinator and staff, and assigned Staff Assistants as well as graduate interns assigned of the Department.

  • Serves as senior member of the Division of Student Development and Diversity working collegially and in collaboration with other Division team leaders and College leadership.

  • Coordinates and oversees compliance with Civil Rights concerns, Students with Disabilities (ADA and Section 504), and other issues in conjunction with appropriate College staff. Serves as final appeals coordinator for those grieving accommodation determinations made by the Accessibility Resource Office.

  • Promotes College efforts for training and awareness of compliance issues.

  • Oversees the College's Student Rights and Responsibilities program and supervises the Student Conduct discipline process and behavioral assessment activities. Receive, investigate, and process appropriate student conduct referrals in conjunction with the Coordinator of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

  • Hears student grievances in accordance with established procedures and policies and notifies students and appropriate personnel for possible remedial action.

  • Serves in an advisory role to students, faculty, and administrators, across campus on compliance and student concerns, as well as other related issues. Serves as an advocate for the students, except when instances of advocacy are in conflict with other position responsibilities.

  • In collaboration with the Director of Admissions, coordinates review of applicants who are ex-offenders and disciplinary dismissals from other colleges and universities.

  • Responsible for recommending and participating in implementing goals, policies, and initiatives relevant to student engagement, support, and development.

  • Both independently and in collaboration with Academic Affairs and Enrollment Management, oversees the development and implementation of comprehensive programs and services focused on the retention of students, particularly student cohorts assigned to Student Development.: Foster Care, Student Parents, Homeless, etc.

  • Provides input and reviews all required reports related to Student Services which are filed with local, state, and federal government agencies.

  • Supervises the recruitment and hiring of faculty and staff within the Division of Student Development and makes staffing recommendations to the Vice President for Student Development & Chief Diversity Officer.

  • Prepares budgets and planning documents, maintains budget controls and expenditures, and approves purchase orders and payroll as assigned. Supervises the selection, purchase, maintenance, and inventory of all equipment.

  • Serves on campus-wide committees as needed including but not limited to President's Task Force for Diversity, Student of Concern, and Campus Assessment, Response and Evaluation Team.

  • Serves as the Title IX Coordinator, responsible for coordinating any investigations of complaints received pursuant to Title IX, the implementing of regulations, and college wide training.

  • Represents the Vice President for Student Development & Chief Diversity Officer in his/her absence as assigned.

Requirements:

A Master's degree in Student Services, Student Development, Higher Education Administration, Juris Doctorate, or a related field is required, OR

Advanced (Master's or Doctorate) degree with seven (7) to nine (9) years of progressive Student Affairs experiences.

Juris Doctorate or Doctorate in a related field is preferred.

A minimum of five (5) years Student Affairs experience working within an institution of higher education including three (3) years of supervisory responsibility at the Director/Dean level is required.

Relevant experience in budget development and oversight and student conduct is preferred.

Additional Information:

The minimum annual salary for this position is $119,174.

Offers of employment will be conditional based upon the results of a satisfactory, required pre-employment Standard Background Check.
