The AVP for Academic Affairs Operations and Planning is responsible for driving the vision, management and enhancement of operational excellence across the division of Academic Affairs. This individual will serve as a key advisor to the Provost in driving a service-oriented organization that is able to execute expeditiously and continuously improve. The AVP will oversee operations, planning and communications for Academic Affairs and support the creation and execution of policies and procedures, collaborating with key stakeholders across the University of Miami (University).

This individual oversees the day-to-day operations of key programs and initiatives in Academic Affairs, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of services under the purview of the Provost. The AVP will play a critical role in supporting the University's academic mission providing operational excellence, and interfacing with key leaders within the University. The role requires strong leadership and operational skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders across the institution. The role also requires the stabilization, turnaround, and ongoing improvement of critical functions within the enterprise and supports the Provost in strategically aligning funds and staffing resources with institutional priorities.

  1. Oversee the implementation and operational execution of key programs and initiatives in academic units under the purview of the Provost.

  2. Provide administrative leadership, including fiscal and personnel oversight, for the operational units designated specifically by the Provost within the Academic Affairs division.

  3. Improve the operational delivery of work in Academic Affairs (i.e., Student Success, Research Administration, Online Education, Registrar, Accreditation, and others) within the Office of the Provost; monitor their operational health and report on an ongoing basis to the Provost.

  4. Identify areas for efficiency improvements without compromising the quality of the University's academic mission.

  5. Provide regular reports and analysis of resource utilization, offering recommendations to the Provost for cost-effective academic operations.

  6. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and overall institutional performance.

  7. Utilize data analytics and feedback from various stakeholders to inform decision-making and refine operational strategies.

  8. Mentor, coach, and build leaders in the operational units within Academic Affairs; provide input and insight on talent development to the Provost and related key stakeholders.

  9. Prepare executive reports and updates on status & progress for various stakeholder groups including students, faculty, leadership, boards, etc.

  10. Build strong collaborative relationships with other units on campus, including with deans and administrative leaders to develop, enhance, and improve University programs.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: A master's degree in higher education administration, business, or a related field is required. Terminal degree preferred but not required.

  • Experience: Minimum of 15 years of experience in higher education administration, with at least 10 years in a leadership role related to academic affairs or operations.

  • Leadership Skills: Proven ability to manage change and work collaboratively across departments and divisions.

  • Knowledge: In-depth understanding of higher education policies, academic program management, and accreditation standards.

  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse groups, including faculty, staff and senior leadership.

  • Analytical Abilities: Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and make evidence-based decisions to improve academic operations and outcomes.

  • Ability to operate in matrixed, politically sensitive environment.

  • Proven track record of performance turnaround.
