As an Associate Toxicologist you will have the opportunity to:

  • Conduct evaluations of potential hazards to human health and the environment of chemicals in consumer products in support of the implementation of the Safer Consumer Products (SCP) regulations

  • Utilize knowledge in public health and toxicity to perform assessments of human and ecological hazards of toxic chemicals

  • Evaluate potential human and ecological exposure pathways to chemicals in consumer products to ensure the consideration of multiple environmental media (e.g. soil, water, air, biota) and sensitive subpopulations to support Safer Consumer Products (SCP) decisions for product prioritization

  • Evaluate the environmental fate and transport of chemicals known to be present in consumer products in order to assist in the development of conceptual models for exposure

  • Prepare, review, and evaluate program documents, of low to medium level of complexity, and similar technical documents integrating scientific, toxicological, and ecological principles to assess potential health impacts

  • Assist in the preparation of technical memoranda and provide technical consultation to SCP staff and management

Desirable Qualifications We Look For:

  • Technical writing experience

  • Research experience

  • Experience with science communication (oral, written, or visual)

  • Experience in risk assessment or risk management

  • Knowledge in one or more sub-specialties for Toxicology and/or Risk Management

  • Experience or education relevant to exposure science and cumulative science preferred

  • Knowledge and/or experience in ecotoxicology

Department Information

There are no offices available in the Berkeley Regional Office, or Cypress Regional Office, and should the candidate choose to be office centered, they will be provided with a cubicle but would have access to private space when needed for confidential conversations.

This position can be located at the Sacramento Headquarters Office, Sacramento Regional Office, Berkeley Regional Office, Chatsworth Regional Office, or Cypress Regional Office.

Statement of Qualification (SOQ) Instructions

A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required for the hiring manager's review. Applications submitted without an SOQ may be disqualified.

The SOQ serves as a documentation of each candidate's ability to present their relevant experience clearly and concisely. Although resumes are also requested, they do not take the place of the SOQ. The SOQ should not exceed 1 page in length, single-spaced, using Arial, 12-point font.

Your SOQ should address the following:

1.Describe aspects of your experience or background that might apply to the work of the Safer Consumer Products Program. Include relevant information in areas such as toxicology, exposure science, environmental science, computational modeling, ecotoxicology, alternatives assessment, and adopting and implementing laws and regulations.
