What we want:
Relationship builders: This leader must be able to form relationships with product development teams to influence design as early as possible to avoid late-stage technical issues. Must be comfortable halting a project if something needs to be fixed and be able to communicate rationale objectively.
Passion. This leader needs to be constantly thinking about their team member's development, organizational structure, achieving project results and how to improve the test function.
Collaborative. The default state of the leader needs to be collaborative, open and curious.
What you'll do:
You will lead a team that brings new products to market for our Sports Medicine business and ensures they meet the clinical needs and quality expectations of our customers. The team develops test plans, methods, and fixtures to challenge product design candidates. This leader needs to be as passionate about the development of their team as they are about the role of Test in new product development and the clinical needs of our Sports Medicine surgeons.
This position is equal parts test engineering functional leadership and people management.
Test Functional Leadership: lead a team of multi-disciplinary engineers (mechanical, electromechanical, software) to ensure launched products are robust to all needs of the clinical environment. This result is enabled by clinical knowledge, technical depth and close collaboration with the rest of the new product development team.
People Management: build an engaged team and ensure their professional development. Ensure that Test team members can tie their efforts to the mission of the Sports Medicine business. Help them choose a career path based on their passions and create an individual development plan to help them get there. Provide performance feedback for the team and hold them accountable to a high bar of performance expectations. Develop a deep bench for both people management and technical leadership career tracks within the Test function.
Speed-to-Market: reduce product development cycle time through early experimentation in both benchtop and cadaveric testing. This should start in the concept phase and be a mix of direct test engineer involvement and influence of the R&D team. Drive early, rapid design iterations to avoid later-stage redesigns when overhead of changes is greater and misses may negatively impact a customer.
Engineering Fundamentals: ensure rock-solid engineering fundamentals support test method development, fixture design, translation of design inputs into acceptance criteria, measurement system analysis, software testing and equipment maintenance.
Technical Strategy: identify technical blocks common to Sports Medicine testing (e.g., Labview code, mechanical fixtures). Develop a strategy to build out technical blocks to maximize reuse and drive team efficiency.
Global Coordination: ensure consistency in results and approach across global Sports Medicine sites (US, Europe) that perform new product development.
Infrastructure: create and implement a strategy to invest in infrastructure spanning global locations in a way that drives efficiency and provides leverage for the business.
SMBU Collaboration: implement best practices through partnership with test engineering teams within the Endoscopy Division, across Stryker Corporation and industry benchmarks. The expectation is that this leader is constantly benchmarking and improving the team's methodologies and technical blocks.
What you need:
6+ years of related Product Development experience (Test, Design, Manufacturing, Quality)
People management experience or demonstrated management potential
Medical device experience
Work cooperatively with Design, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing and Project Management to ensure project success
Collaborate with peers to leverage and share engineering best practices
Apply knowledge of customer problems to the product development process. Understand the basic principles of minimally-invasive surgery or be a quick study.
Proficient with basic mechanical testing methods and equipment (Instron or equivalent)
Knowledge of basic statistical principles
Knowledge of Minitab or equivalent statistical software (preferred)
Work From Home: No
Travel Percentage: Up to 25%
