Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Function)

The tax accountant-property is responsible for technical tax and accounting research, analysis, regulatory reporting and compliance support of the property tax and sales/use tax functions of Berkshire Hathaway Energy, MidAmerican Energy Company, CalEnergy Generation, BHE Renewables Company, Berkshire HomeServices of America and other companies as needed.

Report, analyze, interpret and prepare property tax renderings and reports.

Prepare budget, forecast, cash flow estimates and accounting for property taxes, sales/use taxes and excise tax.

Provide technical expertise in the implementation and use of tax systems and procedures for property and sales/use taxes.

Analyze property tax assessments for potential adjustments or appeals.

Create and/or analyze monthly property tax provisions.

Supports Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulatory reporting and rate- case filings on non-income taxes.

Provide technical input to assist in development of projects.

Adhere to all tax reporting due dates, response to notices and information request within stated time limits.

Assist company personnel with sales and use tax determination of transactions when requested.

Research, analyze and document complicated tax issues. Prepare memos supporting conclusion.

Update sales and use tax materials, utilized by company personnel.

Assist in coordination of sales, use and property tax audits for MidAmerican Energy Company, CalEnergy Generation, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, BHE Renewables Company, Berkshire HomeServices of America and other companies as needed.

File sales and use tax returns for Berkshire HomeServices of America.

Coordinate property tax payments.

Perform special tax projects and analyses, which include providing assistance and direction on state and local projects conducted by outside consultants.

Assist with state and local tax planning opportunities to increase earnings and cash flow, which includes reviewing major purchase agreements to minimize sales and use tax paid.

Provide technical leadership to staff.

Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business. Graduate degree and/or Certified public accountant preferred.

Two or more years of related work experience, with at least one year of relevant tax experience required for the Associate Tax Accountant level.

Four years of related work experience, two of which are in sales and use tax and/or property tax with a certified public accountant designation or a graduate business degree, or six years of related work experience, two of which are in sales and use tax and/or property tax required for Tax Accountant level.

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and state regulatory experience is helpful.

Oracle Financials and Vertex experience is helpful.

Strong PC skills including working knowledge and proficiency with all Microsoft office applications.

Strong knowledge of tax law and procedures, tax research skills, familiarity with various tax returns, schedules, tax and utility regulator forms.

Strong accounting and financial statement knowledge.

Ability to interact with company personnel, both inside and outside the department.

Effective written and oral communication skills.

Adaptable and accepting of change.

Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.

Work closely with team members in the Accounting, Investment and Actuarial departments of the company to compile and review the large volume of information needed to prepare the tax returns and the related income tax provisions and disclosures to be included in the statutory and GAAP financial statements. Interact on a regular basis with our external investment advisor to ensure a thorough understanding of the tax reporting requirements related to the company's complex investment portfolio. What we are looking for: * repare federal and state income tax filings, including all required estimated tax payments. * Prepare and analyze year-end and interim statutory and GAAP tax provision work papers and financial statement disclosures on a timely and accurate basis. * Communicate income tax results and planning opportunities on both a verbal and written basis to tax and non-tax members of management. * Document and implement internal controls impacting the tax department to comply with the NAIC Model Audit Rule. * Interact with external auditors to ensure all requested documentation is provided on a timely basis. * Participate in special projects that impact tax reporting, tax planning, and the tax process and/or the system of internal controls (e.g., implementation of new general ledger system or functionality) * Research and analyze complex tax issues; document conclusions for review by tax management. * Establish and maintain effective relationships with Guggenheim (external investment advisor) and Sammons Enterprises, Inc (SEI or parent) tax and accounting personnel. * Commitment to embrace SFG shared values (Respect, Accountability, Integrity, and Openness) Qualifications: * Bachelor's Degree in Accounting required * Minimum 2 years' experience in tax required * CPA preferred * Experience in life insurance company taxation (i.e., Subchapter L of the IRC) and/or statutory accounting preferred * Experience with partnerships and foreign information reporting preferred * Strong written and verbal communication skills * Advanced Microsoft Excel skills; familiarity with other Microsoft applications * Ability to prioritize and organize multiple ongoing projects * Basic knowledge of Accounting for Income Taxes under ASC 740 and/ or SSAP 101 * Ability to research and apply tax laws and financial reporting standards * Proficiency in corporate tax return preparation software (OneSource experience preferred) * Basic knowledge of internal controls over financial reporting * Desire to attain or enhance insurance-industry specific accounting, finance and tax skills * Criminal background check required.
