General Summary/Purpose:

The Associate Staff Engineer will be responsible for operation, training (including safety), purchasing and maintenance of equipment and supporting the technical activities across multiple facilities in the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI), as well as on the Hypervelocity Facility For Impact Research (HyFIRE), under the supervision of the Staff Engineer for HEMI.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Laboratory Management:

  • Assist in the development of Facilities in coordination with the HEMI Staff Engineer.

  • Provide technical expertise for use of HEMI equipment and facilities, including installation, design, operation, training, and maintenance including, but not limited to:

  • HyFIRE facility.

  • Drop weight test facility.

  • Impact testing and diagnostics.

  • 3D Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Diffractometry, X-ray Photoelectron.

  • Lasers, optics and imaging equipment.

  • Mechanical testing and processing equipment such as rolling mills tension/compression testing, gas gun operation.

  • Participate in the design, assembly and implementation of equipment and electrical instrumentation for material testing and diagnostics.

  • Assist with design, implementation and operation of HyFIRE launcher and diagnostics.

  • Assist in maintaining laboratory safety protocols, including training researchers in safe practices.

  • Assist with the management and scheduling of experimental resources and inventory.

  • Assist in developing budgets and proposals for research experiments facilities, including estimates and purchases of supplies, materials and equipment.

  • Actively participate in mechanical testing experiments on a variety of testing equipment and materials.

  • Assist with presenting and representing HEMI's capabilities around the university and with outside collaborators.

  • Mentor and supervise undergraduate students working for the HEMI.

  • Facilitate work for researchers with external organizations as well as with other departments at the University.

Financial Management:

  • Administer iLabs, an electronic scheduling and billing system:

  • Maintain records of instrument usage, income, and expenditures.

  • Procure goods and services necessary for the operation of the MCP.

  • Evaluate and order consumable supplies for laboratory instrumentation use.

  • Write (when necessary) and maintain documentation for operation and safe working practices and inventory management for all equipment in HEMI.


  • Train department graduate students on safety related issues and incident response.

  • Maintain instrument training and use documentation.

  • Evaluate laboratory exercises and recommend modifications/additions for continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in engineering, materials science, or related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience in research or laboratory setting strongly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in engineering or science.

  • Experience with mechanical test equipment, oscilloscopes and data acquisition.

  • Experience with impact testing and diagnostic equipment.

  • Familiarity with gas gun operation and application.

  • Familiarity with lasers, optics and imaging equipment.

  • Experience with microscopy, and 3D characterization techniques.

  • Experience with CAD, MATLAB, or other engineering software packages.

Any specific physical requirements for the job:

  • Ability to lift 30 lbs.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
