The Associate Software Engineer will work under direction of a technical lead and in collaboration with other software engineers to design and develop software application code.

Position Requirements

  • Familiarity with software design concepts and software application lifecycle.

  • Implementation of user stories and resolution of defects in application code, including relational database modeling.

  • Creation and maintenance of unit tests to verify function-level behavior.

  • Contribution to automated tests to verify user-level behavior.

Typical experience, skills, and qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related scientific or engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.

  • Experience in software development (e.g., Java, JavaScript, etc.), with some web UI development preferred.

  • Experience in an ISO/FDA regulated environment as a member of a product development organization (medical device or biotech industry) preferred.

As part of Varian's Global Innovation Team you will engage with R&D partners to help solve clinical and research problems in radiotherapy. You will participate in the development of radiation oncology treatment planning and management software (TPMS) to enhance its use for radiotherapy R&D projects through creation of new software libraries, new tools, and API extensions to existing products. In so doing you will enable R&D and help streamline adoption of Varian's product offerings for our partners. This position involves all software engineering activities from analysis and design through coding and testing of software. The position also requires deep engagement and daily work with R&D partners to understand their research and clinical needs and to help them with technical questions and provide examples. You will be sited with the software development team at the Washington University School of Medicine Radiation Oncology Department in St. Louis, Missouri. You are expected to build a deep understanding of Varian's current product offering and its external programming interfaces. You should be comfortable working in a fast paced and innovative environment focused on creating safe, reliable software while meeting schedule commitments.
