The Opportunity

  • Legal Counsel

  • Design, Research, and AI (DRAI)

Adobe is seeking an experienced attorney to join the DRAI Legal Team and provide legal advice to Adobe's innovative design, technology and research teams. You will apply legal judgment to provide well-reasoned, impactful guidance. In this role, you will also advise on a variety of legal matters in areas as diverse as artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), university research and collaboration, AI product development, and AI ethics. This full-time position will be based in our San Jose, CA, San Francisco, CA, or Seattle, WA office.

What you'll do

  • Be a key member of the legal team that supports Adobe's technology and design-focused teams including Adobe Research, Adobe Design, Adobe Sensei, Ethical Innovation, and teams developing Adobe's generative AI technologies and features.

  • Deliver practical legal and business solutions with an eye on company policies and procedures to ensure compliance and appropriate risk handling.

  • Counsel researchers and developers on all aspects related to AI development, including issues related to data and model usage and related intellectual property issues to ensure alignment with Adobe's AI Ethics Principles, policies, and standards.

  • Lead strategic business agreements and content acquisition agreements involving a diverse range of content types, including images, video, 3D, audio (sound effects, music, speech), and text.

  • Collaborate with and support Adobe's public policy team in understanding and assessing the AI legal, regulatory, and policy landscape in the US and around the world.

  • Create, streamline, and continuously improve processes, forms, templates, knowledge resources, and training to drive efficiency.

  • Build positive relationships and counsel multiple levels of management and key partners on issues that sit at the intersection of law and technology.

What you'll need to succeed

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and membership in good standing in at least one state bar with a minimum of 7+ years of relevant legal experience, with preference given to candidates with in-house experience, strong technology transactions experience, and/or experience working with AI/ML development.

  • Highly effective communication skills and ability to distill sophisticated legal issues into plain English with an understanding that more is not always better.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction in a fast-paced environment and take initiative in client engagement.

  • Deep understanding of subject matter areas that are foundational to development of AI/ML technologies and software, such as intellectual property, contracts, software licensing, open source, and privacy.

  • Intellectual curiosity coupled with strong problem-solving capabilities, sound legal judgment, and strong business instincts.

  • A mentality that you can learn from everyone, and they can learn from you.

  • An understanding of and interest in new and emerging technology areas relevant to the Digital Media business and an affinity for technical subject matter.

  • A collaborative teammate with a sense of humor, strong self-awareness, and a desire to be the best colleague in order to build an exciting career with our team!
