Associate Senior Counsel, Antitrust
Member of the Corporate Transactions and Real Estate Services team, serving as the primary legal advisor and subject matter expert related to antitrust law. The Associate Senior Counsel will take ownership of issues and coordinate with other parts of Legal and the business teams to reach successful solutions. As a member of the Corporate Transactions and Real Estate Services team, the Associate Senior Counsel will provide legal advice and counsel on all issues related to antitrust. To be successful, this individual must proactively and creatively address the business needs of the organization while protecting the organization from risk.
Lead the development and implementation of comprehensive, coordinated company-wide legal strategies, policies and procedures related to antitrust.
Interface with key external constituents including state Attorneys General, and relevant state and federal regulators.
Maintain an up-to-date understanding of, and proactively counsel the business on, all significant legal and business external developments potentially affecting the Company's legal, regulatory and reputational antitrust risks and relevant court filings and decisions.
Manage outside counsel effectively and efficiently, and consistent with applicable budgets.
Share knowledge and skills in areas of subject matter expertise with other Cigna legal counsel, and key business partners in keeping with the legal department's collegial atmosphere.
Manage other corporate matters as appropriate.
Collaborate with Compliance and other members of Legal to identify known and potential regulatory, legal and business risks and lead in achieving solutions.
Provide business partners with solution oriented legal advice on a wide range of operational and strategic issues.
Support the enterprise with other duties as necessary or assigned to facilitate the organization's legal needs and accomplish its business goals.
Cigna is seeking an experienced attorney with the requisite legal background in antitrust with transactional experience preferred. The following background is strongly preferred:
Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school and minimum of 8 years' experience in antitrust in the public or private sector (ideally within a complex, regulated industry). Must have current license to practice law.
Prior government agency experience preferred (DOJ, FTC, etc.).
Proven ability to identify and mitigate legal and business risks.
Demonstrated track record of establishing client confidence and personal credibility.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to be collaborative, influence and negotiate successfully.
Strong business knowledge and acumen demonstrated via prior roles. Ability to operate with an enthusiasm to learn the business.
Experience interacting/interfacing/collaborating across a broad array of stakeholders in a complex organizational structure.
Requires a customer-focused and creative approach to problem solving.
Ability to maneuver through business barriers to facilitate solutions.
*Position is located in the Philadelphia office.
Critical Competencies for Success
Legal experience: A highly trained lawyer with strong antitrust experience; a lawyer who is high-energy, engaged and has demonstrated that he or she is a hands-on attorney, proactive and innovative in antitrust strategy, as well as effectively supervising outside counsel. The successful candidate must have a proven track record of accomplishment as a lawyer with great intellect and strong technical legal expertise.
Influencing/Interpersonal skills: The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker, proactive and able to anticipate problems and find solutions; he or she must be able to work independently and be able to establish direction and obtain commitment from the group he or she is advising; the successful candidate will have exceptional communication, interpersonal, negotiating and consensus building skills with the ability to work effectively across Cigna.
