An exciting opportunity for an immunologist is available in our ex vivo group; where we leverage top-notch CRISPR and other gene editing technologies to fully unleash the power of cell-based therapy for Autoimmune and Immuno-Oncology indications. The ideal candidate is versed in T cell immunology with a strong interest in T cell engineering and knowledge of T cell biology and related assays.


Design, implement, and troubleshoot experiments, both independently and in collaboration with colleagues, to reach desired goals

Establish in vitro assays to support T cell projects

Work closely with the CMC team on scale-up efforts

Execute in vitro Receptor-Ligand assays to assess surface receptor expression and function

Perform in vivo PK/PD assays to guide cell design selection

Communicate research and development findings with internal teams in a clear and concise manner

Diligent and timely documentation of experiments in ELN and reports


Hands-on experience with human T cell culture, T cell isolation techniques, activation and transduction of T cells, T cell expansion, multicolor flow cytometry for T cell phenotyping and functional readouts

Strong background in human T cell-based assays, including proliferation assays, cytotoxicity assays, ELISA, and multiplexed cytokine assays


Experience with T cell engineering, such as CAR-T or transgenic TCR T cells

Experience with in vivo tumor models


BS or MS in immunology, cell biology or related field with 5-8 years wet lab experience, preferably with some industry experience

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work efficiently and productively in a highly dynamic, scientifically rigorous, and fast-paced environment

Ability to optimize complex protocols and assays to meet desired outcomes

Ability to quickly adapt and learn when faced with new challenges

Strong motivation to deliver solid scientific results and focus on delivering on goals and timelines

Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects in parallel

Effective verbal and written communication skills

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

This group identifies and develops novel strategies that enhance anti-tumor T cell activity through synthetic biology and genetic engineering. This new position will serve a critical function by providing laboratory level support to project leads with a focus on cellular and molecular immunology. As a team member, the successful candidate will use their proficiency in several immunological techniques (e.g. FACS, ELISA, western blot, qPCR, etc.) to help drive exploratory science, make recommendations on next steps and facilitate the transition to drug product. Ample opportunity exists for career development and advancement. * Perform lab associated tasks in accordance with GLP and bluebird bio lab safety policies * Contribute to documentation by drafting SOPs and maintaining an electronic lab notebook * Design and generate novel lentiviral vectors via molecular cloning and sequencing * Perform cell culture of primary T cells and tumor cell lines using aseptic technique * Engineer T cells using viral vectors, gene editing and additional approaches * Execute endpoint in vitro assays assessing T cell phenotypes and functionality using flow cytometry (FACS), western blot, ELISA/Luminex, real time PCR, etc. About you: * BS/MS in cellular biology, molecular biology or related field with minimum 2+ years of experience in an academic or industry laboratory * Expertise in mammalian cell culture necessary (experience with culture of primary human T cells is desired) * Strong background in molecular cloning and cloning software (e.g. Vector NTI, Geneious) * Proficiency in polychromatic flow cytometry and analysis using FlowJo software * Competency in basic cellular and molecular biology techniques including, ELISA/Luminex, western blot, and real time PCR * Experience in live cell imaging using Incucyte and Celigo platforms is a plus * Independently motivated, detail oriented and excellent problem-solving ability * Outstanding organizational skills, and ability to multi-task in an extremely fast-paced environment with changing priorities * "Do what it takes" attitude * Be ready to embrace the principles of bluebird bio culture: b colorful, b cooperative, b yourself Bluebird Bio, Inc.
