Role Description

Pfizer is seeking an experienced DMPK scientist for an Associate Research Fellow position to lead ADME sciences in the in vitro enzymology and preclinical pharmacokinetics group. The qualified candidate will join the Medicine Design Pharmacokinetics, Dynamics and Metabolism (PDM) Department, Groton Laboratories, conducting enzymology and preclinical pharmacokinetic studies in support of small molecule discovery and development programs. The individual will be a member of matrix teams comprised of other PDM discipline scientists and led by a project representative, with expectations that integrated information resolves ADME issues and advances programs. The role includes supervision and mentorship of 3-5 laboratory staff and responsibility for oversight and resource management for experimental support to an entire therapeutic area. The individual will also be expected to advance scientific understanding and incorporate new experimental approaches to address challenging dispositional issues.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as DMPK subject matter expert on dynamic cross-functional research teams, integrating data from multiple disciplines to guide efforts in small molecule drug discovery and development.

  • Provide scientific leadership and deep enzymology knowledge or expertise for lab-based portfolio support and scientific innovation in the areas including CYP and non-CYP clearance, reaction phenotyping, enzyme inhibition/induction or relevant DDI data generation, and delivery or conduct of quality preliminary or definitive ADME studies in support of regulatory filings.

  • Working with our modeling and simulation scientists, take scientific leadership for the predictions of clearance and drug-drug interactions. This includes directing or undertaking physiologically based PK (PBPK) modeling strategies, which support and achieve project goals.

  • Prepare strategic and scientifically sophisticated ADME strategies to advise discovery and development project teams regarding approaches to understand and optimize dispositional attributes and to address any regulatory queries on clinical candidates.

  • Continue to build Pfizer's strong external network in PK and enzymology sciences to integrate advances at academic centers with our internal strategy and capabilities, and where appropriate, to progress precompetitive topics via collaborations and consortia.

  • Guide and develop laboratory-based scientists focused on the development and conduct of novel low- and medium-throughput in vitro assays to support discovery, development and definitive assay for regulatory filings.

  • Direct original research aligned with the research priorities established by the PDM Strategic Imperatives and Business Plan, as well as ongoing assay conduct to support the Pfizer discovery and development portfolio.

  • Proactively establish and grow effective partnerships externally as well as internally across multiple disciplines (e.g. Medicinal Chemistry, Computational Sciences, High Throughput Screening) to advance scientific innovation in the realm of ADME and to develop synergistic packages of scientific capabilities to support the portfolio.

Qualifications

  • PhD with >10 years of relevant experience in the scientific field (eg drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, pharmaceutical sciences, biochemistry, biomedical sciences). In-depth knowledge and experience in all areas of small molecule enzymology science and technology and/or ADME project representation.

  • Experience working in matrix teams within and across technical/research line organizations.

  • A proven track record of delivery in enzymology sciences.

  • Extensive experience in application of ADME science in drug discovery and development programs.

  • Training in people and organizational leadership skills and supervisory skills.

  • Excellent communication skills.
