Job Title: Associate Provost for Faculty Achievement

FLSA Status: Exempt

Range: A Prorated Admin Cap will be issued for the selected candidate(s).

Position Summary Reporting directly to the Provost, this position includes oversight and leadership to multiple programs and departments along with engaging and promoting leadership in all aspects of faculty development and support, ensuring teaching excellence and innovation. This position also works in collaboration with the Associate Vice Provost for Research & Technology Transfer to cultivate a vibrant research culture and advance scholarship. The Associate Provost for Faculty Achievement facilitates a learning environment of intellectual curiosity, personal and social responsibility, success and significance, and oversees the committees for faculty development housed in the Lewis, Coulter, and Reh Schools. In sum, this position is designed to foster faculty development in research and grant writing; and to advance teaching and learning.

Note there is the potential for this 1 Full Time position to be split into 2 Part Time positions.

General Purpose Provides high-level, comprehensive, and confidential advice and assistance to the Provost on a broad range of academic and administrative issues both internal and external to the campus requiring the exercise of judgment and independent initiative.

Remote Workdays: This is a full time, on Campus, position with remote workdays allowed in compliance with University policy.

Duties tied to Faculty Achievement:

  • Serves as the liaison for the Provost with Human Resources for faculty recruitment and faculty hiring;

  • Coordinates with faculty governance and facilitates faculty-related policy/regulation review;

  • Coordinates and develops programming and support for new faculty and faculty in transition (tenure, promotion and those assuming academic leadership responsibilities);

  • Ensures that quality mentoring and developmental support are provided to faculty to enhance student learning and teaching in different modalities (classroom, on-line, etc.);

  • Serves as an important liaison with administrators, faculty, and other constituents of the University in matters of faculty achievement and success;

  • Works with the Associate Vice Provost for Research & Technology and the Sponsored Research Services staff to support and develop the research capacity and endeavors of faculty;

  • Ensures the effective execution of academic practices in alignment with the policies and academic goals of the University.

Duties tied to Program Oversight:

  • Supports the Provost in coordinating faculty recruitment, appointment, and provides vision and leadership of centralized faculty development programs, including resources, programming, and training to facilitate faculty growth in all areas of their professional roles.

  • Primarily focused on faculty development in the areas of teaching and service, the Associate Provost for Faculty Achievement is a key collaborator with the Associate Vice Provost for Research & Technology ensuring that Clarkson continues to expand research and sponsored research programs.

General Position Responsibilities:

  • This position will provide support to the following programs /departments: The Honors Program, the Clarkson School, Department of ACT, and the Library. The position will work to ensure continued development of innovative curricula and effective pedagogy on both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

  • Mentor faculty research and professional development, engaging in the implementation of various academic plans and policies, and ensuring that quality educational services are being delivered in accordance with the nationally established best practices, enforcing policies as well as evaluating efficiencies of the Operations Manual as it pertains to faculty professional and research advancement.

  • A member of the Provosts Council, the Deans Council and other academic affairs committees.

  • Serves as the Provosts liaison for faculty recruitment and assists the Provost in coordinating faculty human resource functions with Human Resources.

  • Provides and oversees a comprehensive program of faculty development to assist faculty at all career stages

  • Organizes faculty development events, workshops, programs, seminars, faculty learning communities, and conferences designed to improve scholarship and teaching and learning.

  • Works with the Associated Colleges Teaching Effectiveness Committee to share resources and programming across the four campuses.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Active engagement in research and teaching.

  • Experience working with faculty in a shared governance environment.

  • Relevant leadership experience (e.g., department chair, associate dean, chairperson for an Academic Senate committee).

  • Strong work ethic

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both orally and in writing) and an understanding of the importance of, and demonstrated success in, promoting diversity and inclusion among faculty, staff, and students.

  • Exceptional leadership ability, with a preference for teamwork and collaboration.

  • Experience handling sensitive issues with keen judgement, diplomacy, tact, and confidentiality

  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion, particularly in matters relative to sensitive or confidential information, personnel or organizational matters.

  • Self-motivated and leadership initiative for assigned projects and programs.

  • Display original thinking, creativity, and ability to solve problems.

  • Must be able to work under pressure to meet deadlines and have strong multi-tasking and prioritization skills in a changing environment.

  • Knowledge of online learning administration and pedagogy.

  • Ability to plan, organize, document, and follow through on initiatives.

Minimal Education: Terminal degree for the field of studies

Preferred Education: Earned doctorate degree with academic credentials consistent with appointment as a tenured faculty as demonstrated by a distinguished record of teaching, scholarly publications, and/or creative accomplishments that exhibit commitment to academic excellence.

Minimal Experience: Seven (7) years of progressively responsible administrative experience working in academic leadership at an institution of higher education.

Appointment at the level of Associate Professor or Professor

Preferred Experience: Eight (8) years or more of progressively responsible administrative experience working in academic leadership at an institution of higher education.

Experience working with the Office of the President
