Basic Function and Responsibility
● Design, facilitate, implement and evaluate the University's orientation, on-boarding, training, in-service, and professional development opportunities for faculty
o Direct a systematized and integrated comprehensive program for faculty development across the stages of an academic career
o Develop events, workshops, programs, seminars and faculty learning communities designed to improve teaching and learning
o Coordinate new faculty orientation
o Develop and lead the First Year First Semester (FYFS) training for faculty new to Biola
o Provide executive oversight to the Office of Integration of Faith and Learning
o Design, develop and implement the annual all-faculty professional training conference
● Promote an institutional culture of faculty engagement and continuous learning through collaboration with key stakeholders throughout the University
o Represent the interests of faculty development at academic advisory council meetings, collaborating with the Office of the Provost to ensure alignment among curriculum, policy, and administrative initiatives and requirements
o Design, develop and manage initiatives at the school, department and individual faculty level that support the achievement of the University Student Learning Outcomes
o Serve on the Provost's Executive Council (PEC) in order to be available to consult with deans and chairs about faculty development issues and concerns
o Maintain a faculty development website
o Serve as the faculty ombudsperson[1]
● Give oversight to the support and representation of the needs of Adjunct Faculty
o Develop and maintain an ongoing training and development program for adjunct faculty
o Design and implement adjunct communication and information systems
o Supervise the Adjunct Liaison Support person
o Design and develop a system for unified on-boarding of adjunct faculty across the university
● Organize, support, and manage faculty mentoring programs, coaching programs, and peer sharing of best practices
o Select and assign senior faculty mentors to new faculty in formal mentoring program
o Select and assign second year faculty as Quick Start Guides for new faculty bridge program
● Construct formal and informal policies and structures to assess all of the professional development programs and opportunities for faculty
o Design and support the faculty instructional evaluation process
o Coordinate the overall administration of end-of-course evaluations
o Oversee training of faculty and administrative personnel in using and interpreting the IDEA instrument
o Train deans and chairs in helping faculty apply their strengths to the improvement of the teaching-learning process
o Oversee the transition to a full-online administration of the instrument
o Provide classroom observation and feedback about teaching
o Provide Strengths coaching
o Consult with individual faculty to facilitate growth in appropriate pedagogy, curriculum design and assessment of student learning
o Conduct and assess exit interviews for departing faculty
● Serve as the final decision point for student appeals and concerns that reach beyond the faculty and/or Registrar's Office (per Student Handbook).
o Review, investigate, and, when needed, arbitrate student academic concerns consistent with the procedures delineated in the Student Handbook.
o When possible, direct students toward resources, strategies and interventions that will resolve concerns.
o Serve as an informative resource and consultant for faculty and academic administrators related to appeal and complaint procedures, policies, and best practices.
o Serve as an intermediary in working toward the resolution of conflict between a student and a faculty member or between a faculty member and Registrar staff.
o Collaborate with the appropriate academic administrators such as department chairs and deans related to student appeals and complaints
o Provide final adjudication for academic appeals brought by students.
Qualifications:
● Ph.D./Ed.D. in an academic discipline
o Minimum 10+ years professional experience in Higher Education
o Ability to meet the criteria for promotion at the Associate Professor level or above
● Strong record of personal teaching effectiveness and course evaluations
● Expertise in designing and implementing training initiatives to support professional development across the academic career lifespan
o Applied and advanced knowledge of career life stage characteristics within the academe
o Ability to tailor training to address needs of identified target group
o Familiar with current and trending pedagogical and curricular design that best supports effective teaching and learning strategies
o Knowledge of current research on learning effectiveness, critical thinking and student engagement strategies
o Ability to design and produce training curriculum
● Experience with cross-disciplinary faculty development
● Demonstrated ability in planning, prioritizing, and decision-making within an academic setting
● Ability to work independently and bring assigned projects to completion
● Experience in leading faculty teams
● Established record of fostering collaboration and integrative partnerships
● Demonstrable appreciation and advocacy for diversity of teaching & learning styles
● Effective administrative and organizational leadership skills
● Experience in the management of a departmental budget
● Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with experience facilitating workshops or workgroups
