As Scout’s Associate Project Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in the development, design and construction planning of Scout’s utility-scale wind, solar and energy storage projects. You will support the Engineering & Preconstruction team’s scope of work for all projects from early development through to notice to proceed (aka the preconstruction phase). You will report to Scout’s Preconstruction Manager and may be assigned other duties to support Scout’s growth as technical experts in renewable energy systems. 

The ideal candidate for this position is a recent engineering school graduate and a self-motivated individual with practical real-world experience in the renewable energy industry. This candidate has some engineering, design, cost estimating and project scheduling experience and will be capable of supporting a wide range of technical project tasks. The ideal candidate will have a passion for renewable energy and a strong desire to grow technically. This position requires the ability to manage multiple workloads in a fast-paced environment. 

Your attention to detail and ability to concurrently drive multiple work streams forward on time and on budget will be key to your success. You must have the ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams whose success depends on soliciting and integrating the technical expertise of every member. 

Project Engineer Responsibilities 

  • Prepare conceptual plant designs using GIS, CAD, and/or design software tools. 
  • Prepare cost estimates for Development projects. 
  • Prepare and update project schedules for Development projects. 
  • Prepare and update risk registers for Development projects. 
  • Conduct technical due diligence reviews of new project opportunities, including travelling to preconstruction project sites and preparing site visit reports. 
  • Lead project coordination activities, such as managing work orders, design/proposal reviews, and other administrative tasks to support the Engineering and Preconstruction managers. 
  • Support contractors with information as needed during the request for proposal bid process. 
  • Manage engineering deliverables and other documentation in SharePoint. 
  • Prepare and publish PowerPoint drawings and presentations. 

Other Responsibilities 

Scout is a dynamic and quickly growing organization. Based upon your skills and interests, your Manager will assign other tasks focused on improving Scout’s preconstruction and engineering discipline and your career. These may include: 

  • Building business cases/protocols to support other areas of the company. 
  • Process improvement and documentation. 
  • Integration of commercially available software or development of internal software tools. 

Requirements

Basic Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Related Field. 
  • Working knowledge of electric power systems, design and operation.  
  • Experience with utility scale wind, solar or battery systems is preferred but not required. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills (some statistical analysis experience preferred). 
  • Effective oral/written communication skills for working with customers. 
  • Collaboration and team-oriented, hands-on field work and client-focused. 
  • Possess the ability to learn new programs and industry jargon. 
  • Solid organizational skills, including multitasking and time management. 

Proficient with computers with strong working knowledge of the following: 

  • MS Excel – Creation and debugging of spreadsheets for data analysis and cost estimating 
  • SharePoint – Document management system for all project deliverables 

Ability to gain experience with the following programs: 

  • Scheduling – MS Project or similar scheduling software 
  • GIS – Google Earth, ArcGIS or GlobalMapper 
  • Design – AutoCAD, pvDesign, Bluebeam Revu, and other electrical and civil design tools 

Work Environment and Work Style: 

  • Experience working with cross-functional internal and external technical advisors and stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a flat organization, successfully leveraging the expertise of multiple colleagues in different lines of reporting. 
  • Ability to multi-task and arbitrate between conflicting priorities with clear target setting and follow-through capability in a fast-paced and rapidly changing work environment. 

Additional Qualifications: 

  • Must have a valid current driver license, and able to travel and perform field work. 
  • Authorized to work in the United States. 

Working Conditions 

  • Location in Boulder, Colorado.  
  • Remote work arrangement will be considered after the first 6 months of employment. 
  • This position requires up to 25% travel to project sites in the U.S.

Timeline and Location

Our ideal candidate is located in Boulder or would be willing to relocate to Colorado in order to be able to commute to our Boulder office on a hybrid schedule (at least 3 days in office per week).

Benefits

Target base salary: $75,000 - $80,000 (Negotiable for the right candidate.)
