Associate Production Editor Bersin - USDC

Work you'll do:

The Associate Production Editor will assist with projects over the entire production process, ensuring assets are in line with style, quality, and accuracy expectations, as well as house guidelines. This will include copyediting and proofreading multiple asset types, occasionally within limited time frames, and working closely with the managing editor, production editor, and other members of the organization to complete projects. As such, the junior production editor is responsible for developing deep expertise regarding our house editorial rules and must be able to juggle multiple responsibilities, adjusting workflow as needed to accommodate shifting deadlines. The Associate Production Editor will also assist with publishing and library upkeep, using both our content managing system (CMS) and authoring tool(s).

Please Note: In this role, you must sit in one of our US Delivery Center locations based out of Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania or Gilbert Arizona (Phoenix Metro).

You will work with the Deloitte Consulting organization to design, develop and build solutions to help clients reimagine, reshape and rewire the competitive fabric of entire industries. If not local to one of these locations, we can help by providing relocation assistance depending on how far you are moving.

  • Assists in the delivery of approved content from manuscript to published product, including copyediting, proofreading, and updating assets based on review from external and internal stakeholders.

  • Copyedits all assigned projects for house style, grammar, and punctuation.

  • Prioritizes workflow and completes work on schedule with direction from the Insights managing editor and production editor.

  • Performs administrative duties (asset cleanup, library organization) using Quark and/or the CMS.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Strong knowledge of grammar and punctuation

  • Experience following editorial style guides

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Effective interpersonal skills, team-oriented approach, and ability to collaborate

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Solid PC skills. including Microsoft Office product suite and Adobe Acrobat Professional

  • You must be able to sit in one of our USDC locations in Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania or Gilbert Arizona


  • Knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th Edition

  • Experience using digital authoring tools

  • Experience with remote work environments

Production Editors should enjoy working in markup languages, have a desire to learn and apply technical skills related to cutting-edge publishing tools, and have excellent grammar and project management skills. We need people that thrive in sometimes chaotic conditions and that can keep track of myriad details while focusing on the customer. Daily activities include but are not limited to proofreading, entering edits into source files, creating schedules, and coordinating vendors. The Production Editor is responsible for keeping freelancers and vendors on schedule and maintaining O'Reilly's quality standards throughout the production process. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Ensure high-quality production for O'Reilly products by performing or overseeing all steps of the production process, including copyediting, proofreading, indexing, composition, and quality control. * Create production schedules; oversee complete production cycles; report book statuses at weekly production meetings. * Prepare files for print and publication in various digital formats, relying on the daily use of technical tools and workflows involving HTML, AsciiDoc, XML, InDesign, and basic command line tools. * Serve as the main point of contact for authors during production, clearly communicate due dates and guidelines for review stages and answer production-related questions or concerns. * Implement and maintain proper markup and tagging of book files to ensure that files can be repurposed for ebooks and other O'Reilly digital products. * Perform quality checks on other production editors' projects. * Work with freelancers and vendors on various production-related tasks, such as copyediting, proofreading, indexing, and illustrations, and provide feedback on their performance to the Vendor Coordinator. * Work with various internal departments (editorial, manufacturing, marketing) to ensure all books and ebooks are completed in a timely manner. * Help evaluate technological advancements (software applications and tools) in the Publishing Services department. * Support the production department by monitoring costs and suggesting ways to improve performance, efficiency, and processes. * Mentor new members of the department and work with the Vendor Coordinator to help train new vendors and freelancers. * Leverage support from other internal and external groups such as tools specialists, technical illustrators, designers, other production editors, and indexers. * Contribute to documentation of production processes on O'Reilly's internal wiki.
