The Vaccine Drug Product Development in our Research & Development Division, West Point, PA is seeking a Senior Scientist or Engineer to join our department. The successful candidate will be expected to work as part of a team that is focused on the development of mRNA lipid nanoparticle (LNP) based vaccines. The main responsibilities include the design, execution, and documentation of experiments to evaluate the impact of formulation composition and the drug product manufacturing process on yield and stability of liquid and lyophilized products.

The successful candidate will be able to work in a fast-paced team environment, able to contribute to multiple programs, and be able to learn new skills quickly. The candidate should possess technical knowledge and experience related to development and characterization of lipid nanoparticle or mRNA-based drug product formulations. Additionally, candidate should have knowledge and/or experience related to parenteral formulation development, biochemical and biophysical characterization methodologies, particle size analysis, and lyophilization or other drying technologies. Good documentation practices, strong communication and collaborations skills are essential.

Education Requirements

  • Ph.D.
  • 3 years, M.S.

  • 5 years, or BS + 8 years in chemical/biochemical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry or related discipline of related experience in process development

Experience and Skills

Required

  • Development and characterization of lipid and/or polymeric nanoparticle-based formulations

  • Strong understanding, knowledge and experience with drug product development and characterization of nucleic acid or lipid nanoparticle-based products

  • Understanding of liquid and lyophilized formulation development and the drug product manufacturing process

  • Preparation and manufacturing of safety assessment and clinical supplies

  • Principled, strong and effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong and effective organizational and technical problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment

Preferred

  • Analytical characterization of mRNA or LNP-based products including particle size analysis, capillary electrophoresis, and other biochemical and biophysical methodologies

  • General knowledge and/or experience with synthesis of lipid nanoparticles

  • Drug product process development experience with a variety of large biological molecules and/or live virus vaccines for parenteral administration

  • General knowledge and/or experience with lyophilization, including techniques to examine residual moisture, the physical properties of lyophilized formulations, scale up and technical transfer considerations

  • Development/characterization of drug product manufacturing unit operations (freeze/thaw, mixing, sterile filtration, filling, stoppering, visual inspection, etc.)

  • Understanding of process related stresses that impact the quality and stability of vaccines

  • Manufacturing of clinical supplies

The Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics and Drug Metabolism (PPDM) Department of our company's Research Laboratories in West Point, PA / Rahway, NJ is seeking a curious and collaborative Associate Principal Scientist for the Quantitative Pharmacology and Pharmacometrics (QP2) group. As an Associate Principal Scientist, you will participate on cross-functional teams of knowledge scientists to discover and advance the clinical development of novel therapeutic agents for cardiometabolic, ophthalmic or immunologic disorders. More specifically, you will apply your quantitative skills with minimal supervision to develop and implement translational PK/PD strategies, characterize clinical population pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of biologics, small molecules and non-traditional therapeutics like peptides, novel biological constructs and others, perform clinical trial simulations, comparator modeling and other model-based analyses to inform dose selection and schedule, clinical trial design and go/no-go decisions. You will apply your expertise to frame critical drug development questions to optimize drug development using model-based approaches and influence cross-functional teams to adopt such strategies. Finally, you maintain a comprehensive background of global regulatory expectations and contribute to regulatory documents and interactions with agencies. The Associate Principal Scientist is a skilled modeler and a quantitative drug developer, with a strong, integrated appreciation of the strategic elements of drug discovery and development and directs the combined QP2 and broader PPDM efforts. The ideal candidate possesses a learning mindset and can work through scientific opportunities within and between departments to develop aligned strategies and solutions. In addition, you allocate your skills and ideas with junior scientists and with the broader PPDM department to advance our science. Excellent communication skills are preferred including the ability to clearly present scientific data in group settings. Within QP2, you have a unique opportunity to accelerate your professional career as a quantitative drug developer taking advantage of our end-to-end pipeline promoting one of the world's most research-intensive biopharmaceutical companies.
