Biologics and Vaccines Analytics (BVA), Merck Manufacturing Division (MMD) is responsible for the commercialization of large molecule (vaccines, biologics) analytical techniques from Phase III through launch and transfer to supply as well as in-line analytical support to enable world-wide robust vaccine and biologics availability. This team is highly motivated, fast-paced and focused on the rapid advancement of Merck's large molecule pipeline, plus growth of existing products.

This position will influence all stages of late stage development, validation, transfers and life-cycle management of methods supporting Merck's large molecule pipeline and inline products. Specific job responsibilities will include analytical development, scale-up and optimization, and commercial life-cycle management of analytical strategy for vaccines and biologics.

  • Participatingin and/or leads cross-divisional teams focusing on late stage vaccinedevelopment as analytical lead, developing the analytical strategy, and as ananalytical subject matter expert with line-of-sight for licensure andcommercialization.

  • Responsiblefor development and validation of analytical methods for vaccine batch releaseand transfer to commercial quality laboratories.

  • Responsiblefor analytical method development and execution to support process developmentand characterization.

  • Activelyinteracting with internal and external counterparts. Will represent functionalarea on cross-functional and cross-divisional teams, as well as managing andinteracting with internal and external testing labs.

  • Authoringrequired regulatory and technical documentation, ensuring that methods aredeveloped and documented according to standard Merck practices and regulatoryrequirements.

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • B.S. in biochemistry, molecular/cellular biology, or equivalent bio-related science with 10+ years of relevant industry experience;

  • M.S. in biochemistry, molecular/cellular biology, or equivalent bio-related science with 6+ years of relevant industry experience;

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular/cellular biology, or equivalent bio-related science with 3+ years of relevant industry experience.

Required Experience and

Skills:
  • Experience with late stage method development, validation, transfer, and trouble-shooting.

  • At least 3 years working experience in a cGMP laboratory environment in the area of large molecules (vaccines, biologics) with experience in immunochemical, and cell-based analytical methods.

  • Experience with deviation management and change control processes.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to effectively identify and communicate risks.

Preferred Experience and

Skills:
  • Experience with drug substance and drug product release, stability and extended characterization testing for vaccines and biologics.

  • Experience developing analytical comparability protocols and reports.

  • Experience in effectively managing analytical development and testing activity at external vendors such as CMOs

  • CMC document preparation.

  • Experience with LIMS systems.

  • Experience with continuous improvement or lean six sigma methodology.

The application of Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence to predict process outcomes and automate decision making is a novel approach to process development. By coupling these techniques with automation capabilities and historical data, substantial opportunities exist to accelerate the development workflow and to develop differentiating strategies. We now seek a highly motivated data scientist, preferably with experience in biopharma industry with exceptional interpersonal skills to join the team. The successful candidate will work with process development, data engineers, Statisticians and IT experts to develop and advance the following objectives. * Leverage experience and domain knowledge in bio-manufacturing processes and databases to help identify and define manufacturing analytics opportunities. * Develop effective means of extracting historical data from multiple sources and set up infrastructure to collate and structure that data * Identifying best approaches for solving scientific problems in a data driven approach, drive the creation of statistical models to solve specific operational problems, identifying opportunities for operational excellence like reduce cycle time and increase success rate etc. * Build and prototype tools (dashboards, apps) to provide analytic insights. Develop comprehensive understanding of data structures and metrics, advocating for changes where needed for process improvements * Utilize novel visualization techniques, enumeration methods and statistical analysis to effectively draw conclusions and determine factors from high throughput, multivariate studies * Apply machine learning to derive new insights and identify trends from historical data, new development data and external literature. Utilize these insights to recommend optimal process parameters and direct the design and development of processes for future molecules and modalities * Capable of translating real-world manufacturing engineering problems into analytics formulations and interpreting analytics results with business partners Qualifications Education Minimum Requirement: * Doctorate degree with 3+ years of Data Science experience OR * Master's degree and 6+ years of Data Science experience OR * Bachelor's degree and 10+ years of Data Science experience Required Experience and Skills: * Experience in manufacturing analytics.
