Calspan's Flight Operations Team is a full service flight test organization housed in a state-of-the-art 80,000 sq. ft. hangar facility on the Niagara Falls, NY, International Airport (KIAG). Our full-time team of experimental test pilots, engineers, mechanics, and technicians take our customers ideas to flight in one of our fleet of jet-powered airborne test beds.

We are seeking an expereince Associate Principal Mechanicla Engineer to design and substantiate aircraft modifications and installations to support advanced flight research projects using Calspan's fleet of experimental aircraft. This role will plan and execute ground and flight-testing activities for prototype flight hardware from concept through implementation ensuring safe execution and provide technical leadership to flight test program teams and the overall mechanical engineering team.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities Listed Below

  • Compensation and position level commensurate with education and experience.
  • Design and lead the effort of fabrication and integration of prototype test articles and other unique aircraft modifications and installations to Calspan's fleet of airborne test beds. These include cabin modifications to integrate test equipment, structural and outer mold-line modifications of the aircraft to accommodate installation of customer externally mounted test articles, and experimental flight control systems and components.

  • Independently lead the mechanical development of component and assembly designs, provide design substantiation, and documentation package for FAA airworthiness approval. Document new designs using advanced 2D and 3D CAD tools to create detailed component and assembly models and drawings.

  • Develop and execute strategies for achieving airworthiness approval for aircraft modifications. This includes loads analysis methods, structural substantiation methods, flight envelope restrictions or a combination of other qualitative or quantitative analysis methods.

  • Provide engineering leadership in the sustainment and evolution of Calspan's fleet of experimental aircraft. This includes the electrohydraulic FBW flight control system in Calspan's Learjets and the structural modifications made to both the Learjets and Gulfstreams.

  • Mentor engineers in the application of mechanical design and engineering principles to support the integration of prototype test articles with Calspan's aircraft.

Qualifications

Preferred Education / Experience for Senior Mechanical Engineer:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 9+ years of proven experience in the design and analysis of structural components, preferably aircraft structures or aircraft mechanical system or;
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to above

Candidates must hold or be eligible for a US government security clearance.

Preferred Knowledge / Ability for Senior Mechanical Engineer:

  • Proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD software - preferably NX.

  • Proficiency with finite element analysis.

  • Proficiency with classical structural analysis methods and techniques.

  • Experience with hydraulic system and component design.

  • Engineering team leadership and mentoring.

  • Engineering design process principles.

The salary range provided is a general guideline. Actual pay will depend on several factors, including, but not limited to, education, experience, training, and other applicable qualifications. Calspan is committed to pay transparency in compliance with applicable state and local laws.
