Purpose: The Associate Merchant supports the Merchant/Leader, in delivering the volume and growth expectations of a book of business, through comprehensive management of a collection, and understanding and applying their financial acumen. They are the subject matter expert in areas including, but not exclusive of, assortment fashion content, sku management, testing initiatives, competitive intelligence and customer intimacy. Influences leadership by sharing a strong, merchant point of view that is derived from customer insights, competitive patterning and hindsighting.

Responsibilities:

Customer

  • Drive customer intimacy initiatives in order to gain insights and influence business leaders' decisions.

  • Engage in competitive patterning in order to understand competitive offerings/market trends and influence partners and product/assortment strategy.

  • Be the voice of the customer through store travel for early read tests, market distortions, and new product launches.

  • Work in stores on a weekly basis in order to gain customer feedback and business insights.

Product

  • Support the merchant/leader in delivering financial objectives and maximizing volume/profit by leveraging intuitive client insights when building seasonal strategies.

  • Deliver consistent and accurate line plans, brand guides, sign requests, product information and assortment details, all while reacting with urgency and comprehending overall strategy.

  • Support seasonal hindsighting process by driving the communication of customer insights to influence go-forward strategies.

  • Drive the communication of product detail to cross functional partners.

  • Support key meetings through deck preparation and completion of ad hoc requests, always staying agile and flexible.

  • Possess in depth knowledge of samples for a book of business and leverage them based on business needs.

Strategy

  • Align strategy and action plan for a collection within a given category to deliver book of business growth expectations.

  • Provide recommendations and gain alignment from merchant leaders to influence SAM.

Financial

  • Assist in developing the line plan for a collection including volume, margin, and strategies consistent with financial goals.

  • Possess financial accountability for category sales, growth, and margin.

  • Leverage and understand historical data to ensure business is compared appropriately to last year.

  • Analyze, interpret and report financial results on a weekly basis to influence business strategy.

  • Be the expert of store/regional performance by analyzing size and market trends and making appropriate recommendations.

  • Correlate MAT tool inputs to financial positioning.

Collaboration

  • Establish and maintain strong partnerships by building rapport and communicating effectively with cross functional partners.

  • Possess category/business knowledge in order to gain internal buy-in.

  • Plan and lead cross functional team meetings and calls.

  • Consistently demonstrate open mindedness and free thinking when problem solving.

  • Regularly share customer insights and business recommendations in cross functional forums.

Leadership & Talent

  • Responsible for overall growth and development of an assistant merchant/seasonal intern.

  • Effectively onboard new cross functional partners.

Qualifications

  • College degree or equivalent experience

  • 2+ years background in a retail buying organization

  • Demonstrates effective leadership skills, entrepreneurial risk mentality and strategic thinking.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of current & upcoming trends relevant to the customer

  • Exceptional communication, prioritizing, collaboration, influencing and problem solving skills

  • Ability to be a team player and to foster a commitment to team work among other associates

  • Systems savvy

They strategize seasonal assortment plans based upon a detailed knowledge of the brand, intimate understanding of the customer and studied appreciation of the competition and overall market. He/she critically evaluates the assortment and reacts to in-season sales and current trends accordingly and translates to future seasons. They work closely with planning, stores ops, marketing, and visual to ensure the brand vision is consistently executed for their books of business and the right product distortions are communicated to create a one of a kind in-store shopping experience. They must possess strong leadership skills as he/she is ultimately responsible for driving cross-functional communication and motivating the team to be customer-focused, innovative, fast and team-oriented in their work. The senior merchant prioritizes workload and plays and active role in training merchant talent within the company. They demonstrate smart risk-taking in investment strategies and merchandise point of views and share best practices and key learning's with other categories. Responsibilities: Leadership and Strategy * Align multiple books of business strategy to total store strategy and supports vision of VSL growth * Demonstrates a holistic approach and champions cross-category alignment and partnership * Contribute to the success of the category through developing and driving seasonal strategies for their multiple books of business that meet or exceed the financial goals * Partners with VP or SVP in SVL category work * Drives category business by "outside of the box" thinking that connects the lines between financial patterns and market/store insights to identify growth opportunities * Leads day to day communication between all members of the team * Develops and maintains effective working relationships with members of cross-functional teams by owning weekly cross-functional meetings * Own VSD and International partnership and communication * Acts as a liaison between design, production and planning partners * Represents that category in key cross-functional meetings, driving prioritization and distortion Financial * Accountable for sales and margin targets for their multiple of business * Responsible for books of business that are critical for the success of the VSL business, and highly impact the bottom line * Develop lineplan architecture by season and cascade to design partners in lineplan reviews * Ensure price value relationship is in line with client expectation * Understand product trends and historical data at the category level in order to manage in season opportunities * Partner with deployment, space planning and demand forecasters to ensure the right product is in the right stores Product * Attend Design Point Of View each season to cascade seasonal intents to the team to enable a smoother line edit * Active participant in weekly SAM "How" meetings, owns flawless communication and execution to drive results * Own reviewing and approval of color/size/store investments and recommended action plans * Work with partners (design, sourcing, production) to create and execute product details that correlate with the positioning of the brand, trend and opportunity * Maximize customer experience by driving execution of all sales education, marketing, and visual requests for the product category (pre-season and in-season) * Understand competitive environment; proactively seek market knowledge through exposure to competitive retails outlets * Oversee customer intimacy and competitive intelligence activities for a thorough understanding of the client and competitive landscape to recommend and initiate new product development for launch and fashion product * Participate in weekly WIP's &/or CFT meetings * Work with Production & Planning to influence sourcing/speed strategies & to ensure execution * Communicates Seasonal Line Plan to Design team, depending on structure of the Merchant team * Participate in SVG work * Owns relationship with Design * Actively involved with Marketing/PR to develop strategies to incubate new businesses Talent * Train, motivate and develop team to ensure effective performance and growth through consistent on-the-job training * Act as a role model within the company by coaching and teaching team members to work together and remain focused * At least one direct report * Demonstrates mentoring and strong leadership to the Jr Merchant team Qualifications Qualifications: * College degree or equivalent experience * +5 years with Brand Development and Merchandise Buying with 1-2 years of management experience * Multi-category experience preferred * Successful track record for high volume, or complex, business growth and bottom line results * Ability to innovate change through visionary thinking * Excellent taste level with proven talent to create a cohesive fashion viewpoint * Solid management experience and proven leadership to inspire a team with unquestionable integrity and trust * Possess strong presentation, listening, verbal and written communication skills * Intimate understanding of competition, target customer and the brand specific fashion trends. * Ability to mentor and train associate and assistant merchants * Ability to adapt well to diverse audiences and environments * Systems savvy An equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate in hiring or terms and conditions of employment because of an individual's race, color, religion, gender, gender identity, national origin, citizenship, age, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or any other protected category recognized by state, federal or local laws.
