The Associate Merchant is responsible for supporting the execution of the creative product development, maintaining seasonal line plans and executing testing strategies for specific categories. They will support in the delivery of sales and profit growth by helping manage the commercialization of new product launches, analyzing consumer insights to help drive key brand and/or strategic initiatives and supporting in-store product launches.

Specifically, this position will:

  • Work alongside Senior/Merchant on growth-driving brand strategy and planning, including new product development, pricing, promotions / sampling, internal associate education and training, competitive patterning, performance analysis and hind-sighting

  • Support the creation of internal presentations to executives and cross-functional teams, from concept brainstorming to drafting documents to preparing meeting materials

  • Responsible for accurately coordinating new development projects, including process paperwork (e.g. Project Initiation Forms, Design Requests, Product Briefs for all products, sampling and gift sets), Costing Analysis and managing communication flow to cross-functional team members

  • Seek alignment on product description, claims, and aesthetics with partners

  • Collaborate with Commercialization Services to monitor timelines, anticipate / communicate issues and drive meeting milestone dates on time

  • Supports the Merchant in developing a line plan that represents the Brand and is aligned with the seasonal merchandise strategy

  • Analyzes data in weekly business meetings to share result driving insights, customer feedback, and in-store merchandising opportunities

  • Seen as the category expert and "go to" person by their cross-functional partners

  • Support in meeting preparation, sample management, report evaluation and analysis and share their POV and recommendations based on current results and category strategy

  • Become the expert in competitive intelligence: understanding other retailer's assortment, pricing and promotional strategy

  • Visit stores regularly to proactively solicit feedback from customers and sales associates


  • 3-5 years of related work experience in brand development, merchandise buying and/or retail management

  • Capability to take direction under moderate supervision

  • Experience patterning competitors and the marketplace, sees the opportunities, and ability to make recommendations for new ideas

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize deliverable

  • Broad-based business acumen with analytical and retail math skills

  • Demonstrate a passion for product and customer satisfaction

  • Be a self-starter and work independently producing accurate work

  • Ability to manage through conflict, problem-solve and build a cohesive team

  • Exceptional ability to enhance cooperative working relationships

  • Able to multi-task and prioritize with a strong sense of urgency and handle the stress that comes with working in a fast-paced work environment

  • Systems and computer proficiency (MS Office-Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel)

Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience

They are the subject matter expert in areas including, but not exclusive of, assortment fashion content, sku management, testing initiatives, competitive intelligence and customer intimacy. Influences leadership by sharing a strong, merchant point of view that is derived from customer insights, competitive patterning and hindsighting. Responsibilities: Customer * Drive customer intimacy initiatives in order to gain insights and influence business leaders' decisions. * Engage in competitive patterning in order to understand competitive offerings/market trends and influence partners and product/assortment strategy. * Be the voice of the customer through store travel for early read tests, market distortions, and new product launches. * Work in stores on a weekly basis in order to gain customer feedback and business insights. Product * Support the merchant/leader in delivering financial objectives and maximizing volume/profit by leveraging intuitive client insights when building seasonal strategies. * Deliver consistent and accurate line plans, brand guides, sign requests, product information and assortment details, all while reacting with urgency and comprehending overall strategy. * Support seasonal hindsighting process by driving the communication of customer insights to influence go-forward strategies. * Drive the communication of product detail to cross functional partners. * Support key meetings through deck preparation and completion of ad hoc requests, always staying agile and flexible. * Possess in depth knowledge of samples for a book of business and leverage them based on business needs. Strategy * Align strategy and action plan for a collection within a given category to deliver book of business growth expectations. * Provide recommendations and gain alignment from merchant leaders to influence SAM. Financial * Assist in developing the line plan for a collection including volume, margin, and strategies consistent with financial goals. * Possess financial accountability for category sales, growth, and margin. * Leverage and understand historical data to ensure business is compared appropriately to last year. * Analyze, interpret and report financial results on a weekly basis to influence business strategy. * Be the expert of store/regional performance by analyzing size and market trends and making appropriate recommendations. * Correlate MAT tool inputs to financial positioning. Collaboration * Establish and maintain strong partnerships by building rapport and communicating effectively with cross functional partners. * Possess category/business knowledge in order to gain internal buy-in. * Plan and lead cross functional team meetings and calls. * Consistently demonstrate open mindedness and free thinking when problem solving. * Regularly share customer insights and business recommendations in cross functional forums. Leadership & Talent * Responsible for overall growth and development of an assistant merchant/seasonal intern. * Effectively onboard new cross functional partners.
