Job Summary:

The Associate Manager will assist in development of and be responsible for managing our Hershey R&D capability based partnership strategy. Lead efforts which will focus on leveraging partnerships for advancement of programs and platforms linked directly to our Innovation, Technology, and Supply Chain Strategies. Determine strategic direction for these external relationships, and work closely with business partners in Product Development, Marketing, Manufacturing, Engineering, Procurement, Quality, and Venture teams to insure that the work continues to meet the Company's business needs. R&D Strategic Partnerships may include a wide range of collaborations, such as suppliers, research vendors, university relationships, incubators, start up companies, and co-manufacturers. The successful associate manager will assure timelines are met, and provide ongoing progress reports to senior management. Scouting for new technologies, development of contracts and NDAs, and facilitation / progression of ongoing R&D external relationships will be included in this function.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Work with business partners in Product Development, Marketing, Manufacturing, Engineering, Procurement, Quality, and Venture teams to develop strategic direction and insure that Company's business needs are met.

  • Allocate resources between programs and work with team leaders of the programs to set priorities, goals and timetables for projects, and deliver on required results.

  • The Associate Manager will be expected to scout, identify, and develop new opportunities for partnerships, technologies, capabilities and innovation.

  • Scouting opportunities may include conferences, trade shows, consortiums, creating / maintaining incubator relationships, etc.

  • This role will include partnering with our legal counsel and R&D project leaders to develop MSAs, NDAs, contracts, briefs, and other related documentation to assist with external relationships.

  • Facilitating and progressing current R&D external relationships, and coordination of key meetings and updates.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Food Science, Chemical, Food, or Biochemical Engineering or equivalent Scientific Discipline plus 5-8 years of applicable work experience, or Master's Degree plus 5+ years of applicable work experience, or a Ph.D. plus 3 years of applicable work experience. MBA or business administration experience is a plus. 0-3 years of experience in Auditing or Accounting

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the Confectionery, Food, Consumer Goods and/or Pharmaceutical industry is preferred.

  • Experience in translating unmet consumer needs with commercial objectives into science and technology strategies and plans. Understands and appreciates the role of science and technology in the wider business context.

  • Experience driving change in a complex business environment.

  • Successful leadership of New Product Development or Technology Research programs in a previous function is preferred but not required.

  • Demonstrated Business, Leadership and Influencing Skills; Strategic as well as tactical thinker.

  • Demonstrated, broad knowledge and expertise in Snacks and Confectionery Innovation. Ability to quickly develop a basic understanding of new technologies and draw connections between business needs and technologies from adjacent industries.

  • Change Agent: The ability and drive to challenge convention wisdom.

  • Proven administrative ability, decision-making skills, financial understanding, business integration skills and technical expertise.

  • Advanced problem solving and evaluation capabilities.

  • Strength in Food Chemistry and Food Processing.

  • Collaborative skills allowing effective interactions with Marketing teams, Operations and Manufacturing Teams, Quality and Regulatory Compliance Teams and Senior Management.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills capable of presentations to executive levels.

  • Approximately 25-40% travel is expected, primarily within the US, but including occasional international travel.
