The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (LAS) is searching for an Associate HR Director to support the HR function through contributing to the development of strategic goals ensuring alignment with HR Policies; actively participating in staff labor and employee relations, providing guidance to managers and employees and to supervise HR team(s) and supports overall objectives.

The Associate HR Director is a new position that will support HR service delivery for academic units within LAS. The position reports to the Executive Director of HR in LAS and will be a member of the LAS HR leadership team.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support the development of unit(s) HR strategies ensuring they are aligned with institutional and unit objectives.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on human resource policies, procedures, activities, and regulations, providing strategic advice and recommendations to leaders and oversees the day-to-day functions of the HR team; performs related HR transactions, as needed.

  • Stay abreast of changes to laws, policies and procedures;

  • Lead discussions on new and revised LAS HR policies and procedures; implement changes and create documentation and training programs as needed; draft HR communications on behalf LAS for appropriate audiences

  • Consult with unit staff and leaders on complex, confidential HR labor and employee relations.

  • Work directly with unit leadership/supervisors on staff related issues; assist supervisors with performance management and disciplinary processes

  • Investigate complaints and grievances; consult appropriate policies and collective bargaining agreements; attend union negotiations

  • Coordinate meetings with IHR, Title IX, Office for Access & Equity, and Legal Counsel, as needed

  • Coordinate FMLA requests; serve as final reviewer and approver for FMLA requests within portfolio

  • Attend ADA accommodation meetings; advise supervisors and leadership on accommodation processes

  • Supervise HR professionals and staff which includes, but not limited to hire, train, assign and view work of, conduct performance evaluations for, address work issues, approve time off for, set work schedules, and set goals for.

  • Provide high level strategic guidance on complex HR issues that cross over multiple policies and campus offices; initiate and lead discussions with internal LAS HR leadership to ensure consistency in application; document as needed.

  • Oversee access to and training of HR systems related to appointments, vacation, and payroll timekeeping.

  • Review and analyze data to understand employee population and improve processes for forecasting and decision making.

  • Serve on campus committees on behalf of LAS

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resource Administration, Management, Organizational Administration, Public Administration, Labor Relations, Business Administration, or a field closely related to the position.

  • Six (6) years of work experience performing professional-level human resources duties.

  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.

  • Demonstrated experience researching, interpreting, and making recommendations based on HR policy.

  • Demonstrated experience working with applicant tracking, employee management systems, and other HR reporting tools.

  • Demonstrated experience with employment visas in an academic setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or Master's degree in human resources, business administration or related field.

  • 9 years work experience performing professional-level human resources duties which included researching, interpreting, and making recommendations based on HR policy.

  • Demonstrated team leadership experience

  • Understanding of employment visas in an academic setting. Experience with University HR systems including HR Front End, Cornerstone, JDX, Banner, I9 Tracker or other similar human resource information systems.

  • Recruitment-related training and/or certifications.

  • Professional HR certification preferred (S/PHR, SHRM-S/CP or related).

  • Proven track record of customer service to diverse clients.

  • Ability to handle multiple projects/assignments simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

  • Must be able to maintain a high level of discretion and confidentiality.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others

  • Ability to develop/establish strong working relationships with Department Heads, Directors, Faculty, and Staff of assigned units

  • Ability to promote non-biased treatment of faculty, staff, students, and prospective candidates.

  • Applies Knowledge of university and campus polices as they relate to hiring, l-9s, international work regulations, complex academic appointments, and other general employment activities to ensure that all related guidelines and procedures are administered appropriately and accurately.

  • Applies knowledge of state and national HR policies and procedures.

  • Applies subject matter expertise across multiple job areas.

  • Develops, implements, and maintains operational plans, programs, and systems.

  • Solves problems that may be vague in nature and may extend beyond direct functional area.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5020 - Human Resource Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. The starting target salary for the position is $85,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (remote work and in-person work in Champaign-Urbana each week) after an initial on campus work period. Sponsorship for Work authorization is not available for this position.
