Job Summary

The successful candidate as Associate Groundskeeper will perform grounds maintenance duties including grounds cleanliness, shrub pruning, pesticide application and landscape renovation around several campus buildings. Maintain appropriate recordkeeping and minor equipment operation/maintenance. Perform snow removal using sophisticated snow removal equipment. Required to work overtime for special events. On 24 hour call back for emergencies.

Required:

  • High school diploma/GED

  • Grounds maintenance experience including basic experience in shrub pruning, pesticide application, and grounds cleanliness

  • Demonstrated basic skills in landscape renovation, pesticide mixing and recordkeeping, as well as ornamental identification

  • Ability to read, write and speak English

  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor and co-workers

  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematics necessary

  • Good work organization and problem solving ability

  • Minor equipment operation and maintenance (i.e., truck, utility cart, etc.)

  • Personal protective equipment will be required during specific work duties as determined by the department

  • Work outdoors in temperatures below 32 degrees and above 90 degrees

  • Ability to lift and carry 25 to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 60 lbs. occasionally

  • A valid US or Canadian driver's license

Preferred:

  • Three years in basic grounds maintenance functions of mowing/trimming, mulching, shrub pruning, pesticide application, and grounds cleanliness

  • Class 3A or 3B Pesticide Applicator's License

Additional Information:

  • Purdue will not sponsor an employment authorization for this position

  • A Background Check will be required for employment in this position

  • The hours for this position are Monday through Friday; 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

  • Occasional overtime may be required

  • FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for Overtime)

  • Retirement Eligibility: Non-exempt Defined Contribution Plan

About the Job As a Grounds Specialist you perform a wide variety of routine tasks to assist in the maintenance of facilities, equipment, roads and grounds A Day in the Life * Serves as a general maintenance person to inspect and maintain all facilities, grounds, and equipment * Performs routine carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repairs. * Ensures all employees are properly trained to operate equipment and are properly educated to follow established safety policies and procedures. * Directs, assists, and supports recreational special events as needed * Assists with purchasing and inventory of incoming supplies, materials, and repair parts. * Responsible for major and minor equipment, vehicle, and vessel repairs. * Maintains grounds which may include mowing, weeding, aerating, spraying, fertilizing, and tree trimming or removal. * Responsible for maintaining all roads such as painting, snow plowing, sanding and salting, repaving, or repairing. * Responsible for providing public safety on property, provide assistance in an emergency, or aid in rescue of accident victims. * Assists law enforcement with investigation of illegal activities on properties. * May assist and perform wildlife resource management. * May supervise, train, and direct offender work crews, assigning duties, planning and directing daily work assignments. * May act as a flagger along roads to warn motorists. What We're Looking For * A high school diploma or GED; * Valid Indiana driver's license. What We're Looking For * Working knowledge of, and ability to apply, general maintenance practices; * Working knowledge of, an ability to use skills in electrical, plumbing, and carpentry. * Ability to a wide array of hand and power tools. * Ability to determine malfunctions of electrical and mechanical equipment and make simple repairs. * Ability to operate a variety of vehicles, vessels, and large equipment. * Ability to do basic math and bookeeping for use in property operations. Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports: This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
