Job Description and Duties

Are you seeking a leadership role in the field of environmental justice and community outreach and support? The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) has a career position available in our Office of Environmental Equity that may align with your career goals and skill sets. The Public Participation Specialist, Exide (AGPA) is responsible for leading public outreach and engagement, community networking, and administrative duties in the DTSC Commerce office.

As an Associate Governmental Program Analyst you will have the opportunity to:

  • Facilitate two-way communication between the public and the Department; ensure external stakeholders have opportunities to participate in DTSC's decision making process; represent the Department at public forums and events with DTSC staff at all levels, with responsible parties and with representatives from other local, state, and federal agencies to establish and maintain relationships that results in effective collaboration, communication and community outreach and engagement

  • Design and implement complex and comprehensive public outreach and engagement approaches/initiatives, tailored specifically to each assigned project to address issues and conflicts that might result in delays of the project

  • Research and analyze demographic data, surveys, community needs to develop customized outreach and engagement strategies and communication plans, reflecting specific step-by-step approaches to public participation processes and/or Department activities

  • Function as a member of various projects and departmental teams, and workgroups and offer consultation, recommendations, and advice for appropriate outreach, engagement, and communication strategies to support the Department's Strategic goals and objectives

  • Analyze technical data provided by DTSC Project Managers to ensure stakeholders receive comprehensive technical information in a plain language format

Desirable Qualifications We Look For:

  • Be able to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks while addressing changing priorities

  • Strong analytical and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders preferred

  • Strong written and verbal communication skill set

  • Environmental Justice experience preferred

  • Community-Minded with a professional approach and experience with community relations and outreach

  • Be able to apply an "equity-minded lens" and approach regarding diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
