DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

Instructors are responsible for teaching Parenting Education courses in the Family Life Education Department.

The primary assignment of the parenting education Instructor will be to develop and teach classes related to family life, early learning and development, and leadership skills in community preschools. This will include providing instruction in parenting education to students participating in college-affiliated, parent cooperative preschool programs, Head Start, and Early Head Start,

Classroom and meeting locations are on campus and in the communities throughout Snohomish County. Instructors must be available to work in multiple locations (Edmonds, Lynnwood, Monroe, Snohomish, Stanwood, Mill Creek, Marysville, Everett and Lake Stevens). The instructor is expected to work with the parent cooperative preschools, local school districts and other community services related to families.

The assignment will include both day and evening responsibilities. A typical part time assignment may include two or three classes at 2 or 3 credits each.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in human development, social work, family support, early childhood education, education, adult education, family and child development, or related field.

  • Equivalent of one year of classroom teaching experience.

  • Equivalent of one year of experience in parenting education/parent participation programs..

  • Ability to meet with students at off-campus sites, daytime and evenings, throughout Snohomish County (e.g. Marysville, Lake Stevens, Stanwood, Snohomish, Monroe, Everett, Mill Creek, Lynnwood, and Edmonds).

  • Excellent speaking, listening, problem-solving, critical thinking and writing skills

  • Ability to use technology; learning management systems, such as Canvas or Blackboard; appropriate software, such as Microsoft Office; Google Docs; college email and other college communication systems.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in human development, social work, family support, early childhood education, education, adult education, family and child development, or related field.

  • One year of recent part-time teaching or experience as a parent with college affiliated parent cooperative preschools, preferably in the state of Washington.

  • Experience teaching in a multicultural environment working with one or more interpreters at the time.

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work will be performed both in a typical college classroom and at preschool classroom sites including many sites off campus. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally will be required. Must be able to move around in a classroom with children in motion; environment may be noisy.

May require standing for extended periods of time, stooping, and crouching in interaction with children. Instructors typically use a personal computer in the work environment. Instructors must First Aid, CPR & Blood born pathogen certified and have completed Mandatory Reporter training prior to start of employment.

WORK SCHEDULE/SALARY:

The assignment will include both day and evening responsibilities. Salary is dependent upon contract load and mode of instruction. A standard five-credit "lecture mode" class would be approximately $5,865 at Step A.

Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.

  • All new positions are contingent upon funding.
