Summary

Provides process engineering expertise for assigned unit(s). Identifies long-term improvement opportunities to improve unit(s) profitability and optimize efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Provides troubleshooting and optimization assistance for Operations. Conducts daily performance monitoring including energy consumption, yields and "process unit health" performance indicators.

    Generates, analyzes, interprets, acts upon and disseminates these performance indicators and unit operations data for assigned units. Evaluates catalyst usage and performance.

  • Identifies long-term improvement opportunities to improve unit(s) profitability and optimize efficiency. Conducts process operations analysis and economic evaluation using simulation software.

    Reviews findings with refinery management and secures approval to implement. Exercises judgment in equipment design and process development to compromise between process requirements, economics, operator effectiveness and environment/safety objectives.

  • Provides technical input into development and implementation of operator training, operating manuals, Management of Change (MOC) development, hazard and operability reviews (HAZOPs) and piping and instrumentation diagram/drawing (P&ID) verification.

  • Interfaces with refinery's Commercial group to ensure unit constraints and yields are accurately reflected in refinery's linear programming model and disseminates individual unit's economic values to Operations and refinery management.

  • Must have physical ability to perform all essential job duties and work extended hours, including nights and weekends in process operations environment. Work may be conducted during periods of inclement weather.

    Must have physical ability to access all areas of the refinery including use of stairs and/or ladders to inspect critical process and mechanical equipment. Must be available to respond to upset conditions during off-hours.

Requirements

EDUCATION:

  • Minimum undergraduate degree in chemical engineering required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 3 years process engineering experience in petroleum refinery required.

This position is part of an Engineering Technical Ladder with multiple levels. The successful candidate will be placed at a level commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Ensures refinery process unit static and dynamic control objectives are met through tuning, development of control strategies and troubleshooting existing regulatory and multi-variable control configurations for continuous operations in refinery process units. Works with variety of departments including Operations, Process Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Economics & Planning and Maintenance as well as outside consultants and vendors. Responsibilities * Provides process control engineering support for refinery operations and capital projects using dynamic engineering techniques bringing time and frequency domains to normal engineering tools. Ensures process units behave as linearly and predictively as possible. Utilizes Bode plots, Nyquist diagrams, material and energy balances in tuning/troubleshooting and multi-variable control configurations for efficient and profitable operations in refinery process units. * Provides basic day-to-day support for multi-variable controllers to ensure model certainty throughout assigned refinery process units. Works with Process Engineering, Economics & Planning and APC (advanced process control) team, where applicable, for solutions to moderately complex problems. * Responsibilities include reporting on monthly APC metrics, training operating crews on APC and advising process engineering team on APC * Supports independent Process Control Network consisting of multiple managed switches and multiple physical and virtual servers as well as firewalls. * Stays abreast of latest control technology through attendance at technical seminars and technical training. * Provides capital and expense project support. Under supervision conducts feasibility and simulation studies evaluating economic value and impact on existing control systems' installations. Reviews project documentation, drawings, equipment specifications and complex loop narratives. * Participates on teams to support refinery activities such as process unit alarm management defect elimination, Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Management of Change (MOC). * Works extended hours, as required, including nights and weekends in process operations environment and during periods of inclement weather. Accesses areas of refinery requiring use of stairs and/or ladders to inspect control equipment. * Responds to process unit control upsets during off hours. Shares on-call duty with department engineers. Requirements EDUCATION * Minimum undergraduate degree in chemical, electrical or mechanical engineering required. . EXPERIENCE * Minimum 5 years' process or process controls engineering experience in petrochemical industry required. * Process control engineering experience including implementing and maintaining regulatory control and/or multi-variable control strategies on DCS preferred. * Advanced process control experience preferred.
