Associate Editor - BioProcess International | Portland, OR

The BPI Associate Editor is responsible for supporting the work of the editorial and web (marketing) teams through manuscript acquisitions support; researching, interviewing, and writing industry-specific content in collaboration with the other editors and with internal and external subject matter experts; and will proofread all editorial content in compliance with publication standards and policies ("house style" based on The ACS Style Guide). The Associate Editor also will work closely with BPI's Marketing and Digital Content Strategist to convert editorial files for the BPI website and to assist with other, ongoing digital maintenance tasks.

Scope of Influence

  • Direct internal: Work with editorial, publishing, and sales/marketing teams, along with events coordinators

  • External: Work with authors, potential authors, editorial advisory board members, information sources, and opinion leaders

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Editorial and Research (45%)

  • Contacting and following up with prospective authors, both independently and under direction from the editor in chief (a major role in support of content development/acquisition).

  • Summarizing recorded conference presentations for publication in print and/or digital formats.

  • Researching, interviewing, writing, copyediting.

  • Proofreading all editorial content; helping with reference checking and other content support.

  • Meeting as needed with the other editors for final edit checks and staff meetings (some of which are conducted through Skype or other platforms).

Digital Content Support (45%)

  • Sending authors their pdfs and related reprint/use information, coordinating requests for physical comp copies with BPI's Sales and Marketing Coordinator.

  • Using WordPress in support of our Marketing and Digital Content Strategist for activities including placing all printed content on the website; uploading PDFs and graphics; writing meta titles and descriptions for search engine optimization; uploading eBook; and working in HubSpot and other Apps to create forms, workflows, and generate lead reports for sponsored content.

  • Assisting with data collection, reporting, overall maintenance of BPI's article archives, and other analytical support, as time allows.

Other (10%)

  • Perform ad hoc duties as needed, such as participating in corporate training events

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in science or communication/writing preferred, and/or at least two years of experience in a similar editorial position.

  • Basic knowledge of and experience in technical/scientific writing and ability to balance journalistic skills with the more in-depth requirements of BPI's varied subject matter

  • Time-management and prioritization skills for balancing editorial with related web/digital work.

  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite, html coding, and SEO is a plus, but not required; familiarity with Windows/Office programs

  • Professional communication skills (both verbal and written), especially with a willingness and ability to engage BPI's subject matter without reservation and learn on the job

  • Strong attention to detail
