The Digital Communications Specialist's primary focus will be to lead a robust electronic newsletter program to greater success. The ideal candidate is a digitally savvy communications professional who can articulate the value of electronic newsletters, social media, and other digital communications in advancing the University's strategic goals, as well as take a direct hand in creating, writing, editing, and ensuring the timely production of compelling and engaging content for a digital-first, visually oriented environment. S/he is a strong writer who appreciates the opportunities that digital channels present, is an avid consumer of digital newsletters, and looks forward to making improvements with each issue. The Specialist supports the University's strategic goals and fosters an integrated communications effort. The ideal candidate has a command of editorial voice, tone, and style that fits each channel within the overall communications program and understands how that sensibility aligns with the University's goals.
The Specialist works in a collaborative environment with writers, editors, designers, photographers, and other communications colleagues to integrate graphic images, music, and other visual and sound components within and across channels. S/he sets and communicates production schedules, deadlines and requirements for materials, and collaborates with colleagues to ensure a smooth and efficient workflow. In addition to creating original content, the position reviews electronic submissions from across the University, edits them, and curates them for targeted publications.
The Specialist must be able to independently write for specific audiences purposefully and persuasively. The position produces a high volume of content under tight deadlines and follows projects through to completion with superior attention to detail and organization.
Proactively manages-creates, writes, edits, and curates-a suite of email newsletters and other publications for faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, and other University constituencies.
Generates story ideas using excellent professional news judgment and aligns content with specific channels to support the University's goals.
Interviews faculty, staff, students, and others to identify potential stories, obtains authoritative information, and follows up on story material.
Uses independent editorial judgment to integrate the most effective graphic images, music, and other visual and sound components from across the University into e-newsletters.
Strategy and Management
Develops and implements an "audience-first" content strategy to support the University's communications goals. Defines content mission and audiences for each publication in collaboration with other senior leaders in University Communications.
Applies strong analytical skills to improve content and delivery by evaluating metrics such as open rates, click th roughs, shares, comments, and other methods of assessing performance.
Is a leader at the University in digital communications, educating and consulting with colleagues about how to improve email newsletters and other digital platforms. Stays abreast of trends and best practices to improve email communications and deliverability across platforms.
Other Editorial Projects
Writes lively and compelling stories for the University website, social media channels, and print publications that connect faculty, students, alumni, and staff to their University community.
Provides editorial support, including proofreading, copyediting, fact-checking, art direction, and headline writing, for other projects in University Communications.
Other Duties as Assigned
Excellent news judgment to identify and prioritize stories
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and project management skills
Ability to craft content for a highly literate and technologically savvy audience
Experience with digital assets (photo and video)
Knowledge of content-management systems and the desire to gain expertise in new and emerging publishing and platform tools
Experience using commercial email production platforms and tools (MailChimp, Constant Contact, L-Soft suites) and their corresponding metrics dashboards and listmanagement tools.
Ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision to deadline
Bachelor's degree and 3-4 years of relevant experience in overseeing email newsletters or other digital publications; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Five or more years of relevant experience preferred, as is experience working at a research university.
