The McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia seeks an Associate Director/Director of Web Technology to join its fast-paced Marketing and Communications team. The MarComm team serves as a full-service internal solutions partner for the McIntire School, guiding and directing clients on their marketing initiatives and reporting on their outcomes. This incumbent will be a highly skilled web technologist, with a broader understanding of marketing technologies, who will serve primarily as an individual contributor in a client-facing role. The primary function of the position is oversight - including building and maintenance - of all McIntire web properties which, at present, includes headless Drupal and WordPress environments. Additional key responsibilities will include onboarding and integration of software; assistance with digital advertising and search optimization; support for email marketing as needed; and training staff across platforms. Success in the role is calibrated through a mix of website performance, project management efficiency, and client satisfaction.

Core Responsibilities

  • Work across the full stack, building, maintaining and optimizing scalable, distributed features and solutions that enable positive user experiences across desktop and mobile with measurable results

  • Develop new features and infrastructure in support of business and project requirements

  • Code updates, server management, database optimization, managing dependencies, load balancing, network configuration, security updates, user permissions, disaster recovery planning, and performance of the overall system.

  • Assume leadership of new projects, from conceptualization to deployment, with a strong focus on prioritization across multiple projects through effective project management and clear client communication

  • Manage vendor support as needed for maintenance and enhancement

  • Work with agile development methodologies, adhering to best practices and pursuing continued learning opportunities

  • Work closely with IT unit to select, procure, onboard, and integrate new marketing and communications technologies into the McIntire digital ecosystem (examples: AI chatbots, calendars, SalesForce products, intranet) as well sd determine sunset plans for bespoke and legacy products.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Computer Engineering or Related Discipline with at least one year of work experience in website management; 5 years of experience in website management including hands on development will be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Ability to project manage the web development process end-to-end, including design, development and deployment of features, integrations, and functionalities

  • Proven knowledge of back-end/infrastructure maintenance and optimization and UX/UI principles

  • Experience with setting up conversion tracking codes, goals and events; remarketing; and keywords

  • Comprehensive understanding of brand for visual style guidelines and content strategy

  • Outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in PHP

  • Proficiency in Drupal

  • Proficiency in WordPress

  • Proficiency in HTML5/XHTML and CSS

  • Knowledge of front-end technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

  • Understanding of SQL and how to interact with databases.

  • Familiarity with concepts and fundamentals of REST API, Mongo DB, PHP, serverless architecture

  • Knowledge of secure coding practices, data encryption, and common web vulnerabilities.

  • Experience with Google Ad and Analytics platforms

  • Knowledge of GDPR and other privacy regulations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with responsive web design

  • Interest in AI and IA integrations

  • Previous professional work experience in a creative or digital agency

Anticipated hiring range: $75,000 - $90,000 / annual
