Job Description:

The Associate Director/Director role is within the Program and Portfolio Management group at Vertex and functions as a Global Program Manager for clinical stage programs in cystic fibrosis or other Vertex disease areas. This position will work in partnership with the project leads to provide strategic and operational leadership of program development activities. This will include enabling high performing cross-functional teams to develop and execute upon global, integrated development plans and program strategies, while ensuring alignment through senior management and corporate goals. The individual is expected to ensure communication of program status, timelines, updates, key decisions, risks and scenarios to all key stakeholders. The position will report to a Disease Strategy Portfolio Manager (Senior Director) within Program and Portfolio Management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a cross-functional drug development Project Team to deliver on program strategies

  • Drive the generation and execution of cross-functional development plans

  • Generate and maintain integrated project plans (IPP) that serve as a single source of cross functional inter-dependencies

  • Challenge team to think about and anticipate risks, proactively manage risks and develop mitigation strategies

  • Ensure effective communication within teams, across functions, through sub-teams, and to key stakeholders throughout the organization, including senior management

  • Drive adherence to the Vertex Drug Development and governance processes, including delivery of timely and quality Project Team and/or sub-team deliverables

  • Lead and/or participate in special department, cross-functional, or team projects

  • Develop & maintain high performing teams

  • Facilitate resource planning, financial, and capacity assessments

  • Coordinate activities with external business partners and alliances, where applicable; contribute to achieving partnership contract deliverables

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences or a relevant field

  • Eight to ten years industry experience in the Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical, or other Healthcare related field

  • Three (3) years experience managing and/or leading cross-functional drug development teams

  • Drug Development knowledge with basic to strong understanding of other functions relevant to the position which may include: Research, Toxicology, Clinical Pharmacology, Clinical, Manufacturing & Operations, and Regulatory

  • Utilization of Project Management tools, practices, and infrastructure, as related to the Biopharmaceutical Industry

  • Familiarity with the Project Management principles, practices, and technology

VIEW JOBS 2/12/2020 12:00:00 AM 2020-05-12T00:00 Job Description POSITION SUMMARY: The Senior Director, Project Portfolio Management will be responsible for overseeing and managing the IT project portfolio for the Enterprise Applications and Analytics function. This is a critical role, in place to ensure that this cross-functional portfolio of IT initiatives has been prioritized appropriately and is aligned to business strategies, goals, and objectives. The Senior Director will verify that all projects in the portfolio are resourced and funded appropriately, risks and issues are properly mitigated, and proper governance/ communication procedures are in place. The Senior Director will also be responsible for directly managing larger, strategic initiatives to ensure successful delivery. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: * Partner with the GIS Program Management Office (PMO) to establish improved processes, tools and templates in order to effectively prioritize and manage our Enterprise Applications and Analytics project portfolio * Direct and oversee successful project delivery across the portfolio with clear accountability and transparency across the teams and business stakeholders, including success criteria, risks/issues, budgets and resources * Build strong relationships with peers and colleagues across the GIS organization, and with key business partners, in order to plan and execute the project portfolio * Clearly communicate and present project portfolio strategies and updates to senior leaders, business partners, and the GIS Leadership Team * Manage large and complex strategic initiatives and programs effectively and efficiently * Provide ongoing support and guidance for other project managers across the team, including expertise for different project methodologies (Agile, Scrum, Waterfall) and regulatory complexities (GxP, Sarbanes-Oxley) * Recruit, manage, and coach additional project managers as the team expands in support of Vertex and GIS' strategies and growth REQUIRED SKILLS: * Deep expertise and background with IT project and portfolio management concepts and frameworks (e.g. SDLC, Agile) * Demonstrated proficiency in managing large, complex projects * Experience leading organizational change management efforts for enterprise programs * Very strong communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills * Ability to effectively facilitate and manage cross-functional meetings and discussions * Excellent presentation skills and ability to clearly and succinctly express ideas * Proven capabilities in building and leading high-performing project teams PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: * B.S. and 12+ years relevant work experience * Biotech or pharmaceutical industry experience * Experience with general and administrative, manufacturing and supply chain business functions and systems * Hands on experience with the Agile project methodology * Direct experience in complying with GxP and/or Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) regulations Company Information Vertex is a global biotechnology company that invests in scientific innovation.
