Position Summary:

The Associate Director of Procurement

  • Strategic Sourcing is responsible for managing Alkermes Global strategic sourcing activities, ensuring the right capabilities, guidance, resources, and accountabilities across sourcing activities. This position will be responsible for the development and implementation of site-wide strategic procurement plan for sourcing and management across multiple segments within the Corporate Services categories. This position will provide leadership and direction to all strategic sourcing activities and implement policies, best-practices, compliance reporting and financial tracking across the business. It requires working closely with multiple internal and external senior partners to facilitate and optimize the strategic sourcing process. This role directly supports the strategy driving rapid growth of the company and the dynamic needs of Alkermes support functions. It is critical to scaling the business. This leader will be responsible for working with our corporate team and develop a purchasing strategy that supports the organization's strategic plan.

Essential Areas of Responsibility:

To lead the creation, execution and management of comprehensive global sourcing strategies for specified global spend categories within the responsibility scope of Indirect Procurement

  • Leveraging deep category and market expertise

  • Operating in a truly global manner

  • Utilizing Alkermes and Alkermes Procurement policies, procedures, processes, systems and methodologies

  • Engaging and building strategic relationships with key senior stakeholders and business partners in Alkermes

  • Understanding the business requirements of key stakeholders and business partners and positioning the Procurement value proposition

  • Delivering the needs of key stakeholders and business partners through creation and execution of global sourcing strategies

  • Identifying and delivering business benefits aligned to assurance of supply, quality, service, cost and innovation

  • Ensuring financial value delivered is recognized by affected stakeholder communities and Finance groups, to allow benefit capture and transparent decision making on how benefits are allocated by business units, in line with the Spend Management Framework

  • Creating and delivering effective budgets (Plans of Purchase) agreed with key stakeholders and Finance in accordance with the Spend Management Framework

  • Leading, developing and managing the supply base for the in scope spend categories

  • Building and leading effective strategic relationships with key suppliers

  • Driving sustainable value for Alkermes from key supplier relationships

  • To lead, manage, direct and develop teams of professional sourcing staff, located globally, to facilitate the delivery of the role purpose described above

  • Direct reports, indirect reports, matrix reports will be in scope

  • Developing capability of staff both technical and behavioral

  • Leading improvements in team performance

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Bachelors in life sciences or business major required, Master's degree preferred

  • 8-10 years of experience in procurement and sourcing or closely related

  • Proven RFQ experience in a cross functional environment

  • Proven track record of delivering tangible results in a global complex/decentralizing environment

  • Extensive experience in managing cross-functional teams

  • Extensive experience in working with multiple teams and projects simultaneously

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Travel domestic and international up to 15%

  • In-house position based in Waltham, MA

  • Reports to Director of Procurement, Indirects


The candidate will be a leader, with broad awareness of resources and best practices in strategic sourcing.

  • Self-directed with an ability to network and identify strategic sourcing opportunities

  • Strong project management and operations skills

  • High attention to detail and demonstrated ability to manage multiple critical path projects concurrently

  • Ability to develop, implement and monitor a metrics performance package for sourcing activities

  • General knowledge of GMP and/or GCP

  • Proficient knowledge of strategic sourcing best practices and support systems

  • Demonstrated capabilities with ERP systems such as Oracle or SAP as well as Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Project software required

  • Demonstrates flexibility adapting to external environment influences through development of new strategies and tactics

  • Excellent skills in influencing and strong collaboration skills

  • Ability to multi-task and manage complexity

  • Positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills required to effectively address problems and interface with other functional areas of the company while working in a matrixed global environment.

  • Extensive stakeholder management experience

  • Ability to lead through influence

  • Leveraging professional expertise and relationships to contribute to strategy and drive business results. Leads the development of functional strategy.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both oral and written are required
