The Associate Director for Residential Life is a live-on professional staff position that provides tactical leadership for the Residential Life Program at the University of Miami. Primary areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to student and professional staffing, oversight of the residential areas, residential operations, and the area desk operations. The Associate Director is also involved in aspects related to planning, project management, programming, student behavior management, crisis management, and coordination of efforts with other areas of Housing & Residential Life as well as other University offices. Plays a significant role in risk mitigation and management. This position involves significant evening & weekend work.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Serves as part of the Residential Life leadership team. Supervised by the Director of Residential Life.

  • Supervises 3 Senior Area Directors, Residential Operations Manager, and Residential Desk Manager. Indirectly supervises 7 Residential Life Coordinators, Residential Desk Specialist, and 200 student employees.

  • Leads a team-oriented setting to provide a supportive and educational residential experience for over 4,000 residents.

  • Coordinates a comprehensive performance appraisal program for professional staff reports.

  • Oversees job performance concerns for Residential Life student staff employees.

  • Facilitates effective communication and ensures commitment to the University Purpose, Values and Service Standards.

  • Facilitates positive staff communication, morale, and performance throughout the Residential Life staff functions of the Department.

Student Development & Learning

  • Supports the execution, successful implementation, assessment, and marketing of residential experience outcomes.

  • Communicates expectations and assessment goals related to the residential experience outcomes. Responsible for ensuring Residential Life staff implement programs and initiatives aligned with said outcomes.

  • Encourages active use of University resources and enhances student development and learning in the residential colleges and apartment areas.

  • Supports residential life assessment initiatives including the Fall community feedback survey, the Spring Skyfactor survey, the first year Insights retention survey, and the assessment of engagement initiatives.

  • Liaises with residential faculty, faculty fellows, and other partners that enhance learning in the residential experience.

  • Develops and/or reviews policies, procedures, and processes for aspects related to the Residential Life program.

  • Serves as a liaison to departmental and University colleagues, particularly with departments and organizations involved in programming and educational support services.

  • Supports the development and implementation of new residential experience outcomes, initiatives, and policies as it relates to the Housing Facilities Strategic Master Plan.

  • Provides leadership in developing an employment and residential experience that is inclusive and meets the needs of under-represented populations.

  • Serves as escalation contact for student & parent concerns with Residential Life related situations and services.

Administration

  • Oversees residential life operations through supervision of Residential Operations manager.

  • Supports residential area administrative operations which include University Village mail and packages, health and safety inspections, opening and closing operations, reservation requests, and billing.

  • Oversees all residential desk operations through supervision of Residential Desk Manager.

  • Supports desk operations which include customer service, access management, and staffing.

  • Ensures policies, procedures, manuals, and standard operating procedures are updated and align with industry standards.

  • Responds to concerns in a timely, professional, and caring manner.

Safety, Security, Health & Behavior Management

  • Works closely with the Housing & Residential Life leadership team, the Division of Student Affairs, and the University of Miami Police Department to respond to crises in the Residential Colleges, University Village, and elsewhere on-campus (as appropriate). Assists in the resolution of escalated student & parent concerns with Residential Life related situations and services.

  • Responds to concerns in a timely, professional, and caring manner.

  • Involved in training and preparing Residential Life student and professional staff to succeed in fulfilling their duties.

  • Provides on-call crisis response leadership and coverage for Residential Life operations outside of normal business hours.

  • Serves as tier 1 "essential staff" in the event of a hurricane, including coordinating distribution of information and supplies, providing supervision during the event (on campus or if necessary, at designated shelter), and assisting in recovery post operations.

  • Works collaboratively with University Police and Facilities to maintain a safe and healthy physical environment for students.

  • Reviews and approves (when appropriate) requests to search as outlined in University policy.

  • Supports risk management oversight for Residential Life.

Other Duties

  • Living on campus in a location designated by the Department of Housing and Residential Life is required as it is a condition of employment. The Associate Director will serve on call, respond to elevated residential crises, maintain a presence in the residential areas, and support evening and weekend campus engagements.

  • Provides departmental leadership as needed to external offices and represents Housing and Residential Life on Departmental, Divisional, and University committees as required.

  • In the absence of the Director, provide leadership.

  • Represents Housing and Residential Life on divisional committees as requested.

  • Monitors programmatic budgets. Ensures compliance with policies, procedures, and expectations related to budget and procurement.

  • Special projects and other duties as assigned by the Director of Residential Life.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience with full-time and student staff.

  • Strong administrative and problem-solving skills.

  • Competence with learning outcomes, first-year student experience, and supervision practices.

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to lead, motivate, direct, and communicate with all levels of employees, both internal and external.

  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships.

  • Demonstrated skills in managing crisis situations.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and directly with both internal and external constituents, including students and their families.

Education Requirements (Essential Requirements):

  • Master's degree in college student personnel, higher education administration, counseling, or related field required.

Work Experience Requirements (Essential Requirements):

  • Minimum of five (5) years of full-time, progressive professional experience in a college or university housing and residential life setting or similarly applicable experience.

  • Experience with supervision, student conduct, crisis response, residential programming, outcomes/assessment, and working with a diverse population is desirable.
