Mission or Goal of Unit: Our mission is to provide high-quality, cost-effective pathology services in a manner that supports the patient care, education, and research missions of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System and School of Medicine.
Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Pathology at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine is seeking a full-time Assistant or Associate Professor (commensurate with experience) with expertise in clinical pathology and transfusion medicine.
Position Responsibilities:
Clinical: Serve as Associate Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine, and Associate Director or Director of Apheresis, commensurate with experience. Medical direction of blood bank related clinical services, as needed. Provide medical oversight to all medical, technical and regulatory processes and procedures, including quality assurance. Promote the use of safe and effective blood transfusion components and services throughout the medical center, working closely with clinicians in hematology, oncology, stem cell transplantation, neurology, obstetrics and cardiothoracic and trauma surgery.
Service: Participate in departmental, institutional and national committees when necessary.
Teaching: Participate in the educational activities of Transfusion Medicine including: (1) didactic presentations, rounds, and seminars involving residents, medical and graduate students, and dental and allied health students; (2) continuing education for faculty, nurses, allied health personnel, and community physicians; and (3) development of workshops at the local, state, and national level.
Research: Participate in scholarly effort through presentations at national meetings, developing clinical research collaborations, contributing to peer-reviewed scientific literature, and participating in appropriate professional organizations.
The faculty member will report to and work closely with the Division Chair to further the mission and vision of the Department of Pathology.
Required Qualifications:
MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree
Board certification by the American Board of Pathology in combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology or Clinical Pathology, or board certification in adult or pediatric Hematology/Oncology
Board certification or eligibility in Transfusion Medicine
Interest or experience in laboratory management
A scholarly record of publication in books and peer-reviewed journals
Full, unrestricted medical licensure in Virginia
Experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment, or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
