LEAD Associate Director for Student Advocacy

The Associate Director's primary focus is to provide the strategy and oversight to ensure that the LEAD Scholars Program is providing effective advocacy for the program's first generation college student participants The Associate Director is the primary contact person within the LEAD Scholars Program to oversee efforts to support the welfare of participants and ensure that first-generation college students' needs are being met by faculty, staff and campus entities. The Associate Director oversees the recruitment of new LEAD Scholars and the planning of LEAD Week, administers student scholarships, develops LEAD strategy to achieve wellness related goals, and authors reports related to LEAD's student advocacy work. The Associate Director also manages a limited caseload of students, primarily transfer students; supervises two Assistant Directors, and provides crisis management. This person also provides training and consultation to faculty and staff regarding first-generation college student needs and helps to ensure that first-generation college students' concerns are addressed in campus services, programs, policies, and protocols.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1.Student Welfare and Student Advising (30%)

  • Provide leadership in coordinating support for students in the LEAD Scholars Program

  • Oversee and uphold student welfare policies and practices in the LEAD Scholars Program that align with those of the university

  • Oversee and maintain a proactive outreach system to identify, monitor and track student welfare issues

  • Develop overall strategy for LEAD, in collaboration with Director, to provide holistic advising and support for students by addressing mental health, family relationships, and academic and financial concerns among others and providing direct support to a limited number of students

Provide tailored support and advising to special populations among LEAD Scholars including BIPOC students, undocumented students, transfer students, veterans, foster youth, and other intersecting identities.

  • Provide crisis management and advise other staff on managing crisis situations.

  • Manage and distribute LEAD emergency and scholarship (academic year and summer school,funding to help address students' financial concerns

  • Manage reports on LEAD Student Advocacy work for annual reports, impact reports for donors and other needs.

  • Build a network of support that includes on and off campus resources, ensuring effective advocacy, referral and collaboration with such units as Counseling and Psychological Services, Office of Student Life, Office of Multicultural Learning, Wellness Center, Office of Accessible Education, the Drahmann Center and Financial Aid.

  • Provide consultation to on-campus units, faculty and staff regarding the needs of first-generation college students to ensure they are effectively supported.

  • Remain abreast of research, current trends, practices and legal issues pertinent to the needs of first-generation college students.
    2.Prospective Student Recruitment (5%)

  • Oversee recruitment and matriculation of new LEAD Scholars in collaboration with LEAD team members, Admissions, Drahmann Center, Registrar's Office and other campus partners

  • Managing the new student invitation and application process including responding to request for additional information and outreaching to potential LEAD Scholars, in collaboration with the Operations Manager

  • Oversee outreach efforts, including email campaigns and phone calls with prospective LEAD Scholars

  • Collaborate with LEAD Marketing and Program Coordinator to provide recruitment materials during information sessions, admitted students day, and other prospective students events

  • Regularly share updates with the LEAD team on recruitment efforts

  • Attend and participate in the New Student Planning Group weekly meetings

  • Provide consultation on the Level 2 student recruitment with the Assistant Director of Student Advocacy

  • Track and analyze recruitment data to assess the effectiveness of various strategies and make data-driven decisions
    3.Orientation (5%)

  • Oversee the planning and implementation of LEAD the coordination of LEAD Week, new student intensive orientation, with the support of other LEAD staff members. This includes educational workshops, wellness-based workshops, activities that increase belonging and schedule and connect with other departments to deliver relevant workshops

  • Develop the LEAD Week planning timeline and regularly check-in with LEAD staff and the progress of assigned tasks

  • Assist with the LEAD Week Student Staff hiring process including checking in the with Assistant Director of Student Advocacy and the Associate Director of Curricular and Co-Curricular, providing feedback on potential students leaders, and recruitment efforts

  • Recruit, hire, and train the LEAD Week Assistants in preparation for LEAD Formation and LEAD Week

  • Regularly check in and coordinate with LEAD Staff on components of LEAD Week they support

  • Act as the main point person during LEAD Week including being on-call for the LEAD Week Assistants after hours.

  • Troubleshoot any issues related to LEAD Week including scheduling issues, student wellbeing issues, and/or student staff issues

  • Solicit feedback from both student staff and professional staff on the delivery of LEAD Week
    4.Program Coordination (20%)

  • Develop strategies by which LEAD can advance holistic wellness among students, and assess those efforts in collaboration with other LEAD staff members and Office of Educational Assessment

  • Collaborate with campus and off-campus constituents to develop and implement holistic wellness support for LEAD Scholars Oversee administrative processes for programming in collaboration with Operations Manager

  • Provide consultation on LEAD Peer Mentoring Program
    5.Training and Outreach (10%)

  • Plan and implement training sessions for faculty and staff about the first-generation college student experience and best practices for support.

  • Oversee a committee of faculty and staff who provide advocacy and/or support for first-generation college students in their areas.
    6.Professional Staff Supervision (20%)

  • Coordinate and conduct interviews, evaluate candidates, and hire the (2) Assistant Director of Student Advocacy position

  • Coordinate and oversee the onboarding process for the (2) Assistant Director of Student Advocacy

  • Set clear expectations and mutual goals for the (2) Assistant Director of Student Advocacy

  • Supervise the areas of work assigned to the (2) Assistant Director of Student Advocacy

  • Meet regularly to provide consultation on work-related issues including programming, student support, budgeting and professional development

  • Lead weekly Advocacy Team meetings

  • Conduct regular performance reviews and provide constructive feedback

  • Delegate tasks related to student advocacy work
    7.Team Member and Other Responsibilities (10%)

  • Engage regularly in LEAD programming and activities to build connections with students

  • Support significant LEAD initiatives such as National First-generation College Celebration

  • Participate in assessment and reporting as appropriate

  • Communicate regularly with the Office of Student Life, Residence Life, Cowell Center, and other departments as needed.

  • Serve on University-wide committees as a representative of the LEAD Scholars Program as appropriate to areas of responsibility.

  • Collaborate with Marketing and Program Coordinator on wellness and LEAD Week-related marketing and promotion

  • Provide financial updates to Director on budget areas

GENERAL GUIDELINES

6.Prepare progress reports; inform supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals.

7.Ensure completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions.

8.Prepare and submit reports as requested and required.

9.Develop and implement guidelines to support the functions of the unit.

Provides Work Direction

  • Provides supervision to the Assistant Director of Student Advocacy

  • Supervision of student assistants work as a teammate with colleagues in the department.

Education and/or Experience

Required

1.Bachelor's degree in social work, counseling, higher education administration, college student services, education or related field.

2.5-6 years of work in a related counseling field or within a student services department.

2.Minimum of 3 to 5 years of progressively responsible work in an academic setting.

3.Minimum of 2 years of experience engaging in student advocacy and support, specifically with diverse student populations.

Preferred

1.Master's degree in social work, counseling, higher education administration, college student services, education or related field.

2.Experience and knowledge of mental health issues and concerns
