Overview

Residential Life is seeking to hire a dynamic Associate Director of Residential Life

  • Learning & Development. This position serves as an integral member of the Residential Life leadership team in providing leadership and daily management to a vibrant residential education program in a liberal arts environment. This position supervises Residence Hall Directors and provides department leadership for the residential experience and Life@Mac program, in close partnership with the Executive Director of Residential Life.

About The Department:

Mission: Residential Life at Macalester College utilizes a student-focused, learning-centered approach to foster resident development, authentic relationships, and inclusive living-communities. We do this through our implementation of LIFE@MAC, community standards, and housing services.

Living on campus is an important part of a Macalester student's education. Residential Life focuses on the whole student experience as well as fostering learning beyond the classroom setting. Students are provided numerous opportunities to learn about themselves as well as meet, interact, and develop relationships with others on the floor, building community with those who are different from themselves. Our goal is to give students a greater understanding of their responsibility to the local, national, and global communities as citizens of the world.

Residential Life at Macalester serves approximately 1250 students in campus housing. Living options

include traditional and suite style residence halls, theme houses, language houses, and apartments

located above a Grand Avenue restaurant.

On campus Living Learning Communities (LLCs) include: Language Houses and Specialty Houses: Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese House, Arabic House, Veggie Co-op, Eco House, Summit Study Away House, Substance Free-Affirming Community, Dietary Affirming Community, and Cultural House.

All first-year and sophomore students are required to live on-campus. About one fourth of the junior class

and one fifth of the senior class also live on campus. We also have transfer students who live on campus, although they are not required to live on campus.

Staffing includes five professional, masters' degree level Residence Hall Directors (RHD), Assistant Director of Residential Services, Associate Director of Student & Community Support, Associate Director of Learning & Development, and the Executive Director of Residential Life. It also includes a student staff of 35 Resident Assistants and 5 Office Assistants, and 4 Programming Assistants. The RHD team provides 24-hour on-call support to residential communities and trains, coaches, and supervises a team of undergraduate paraprofessionals (Resident Assistants) who are resources, educators, and community builders to our students. RHDs and RAs are also visible and involved members of their residential communities. All members of the staff work in collaboration with students, faculty and staff to provide opportunities, support, and a rewarding living environment to residents. Office Assistants (OA) are students who provide a welcoming environment in the building in which they're assigned and offer administrative support to the multiple living communities. Programming Assistants (PAs) develop programming for students in the residence halls.

Responsibilities

  • Residential Experience: Manages and implements a robust residential experience (Life@Mac) that centers around students' holistic learning. Develops on-going assessment efforts including curriculum design and development, and student learning initiatives.

  • Residential Life Supervision and Leadership: Supervises multiple Residence Hall Directors and their respective returning student communities. Provides strategic leadership for residential educational opportunities, identity development, and learning initiatives. Leads student staff selection process and training program.

  • Partnerships: Partnerships with Academic Programs, Career Exploration, Center for Study Away, Center for Student Leadership and Engagement, and other campus units in the development and facilitation of Living Learning Communities and first-year specific communities that supports students' retention and success. Partners with Residential Life colleagues on overlap between Life@Mac residential experience program within student conduct, community support, and residential services/operations.

  • Care Management Collaboration: Works collaboratively with other Residential Life leadership team members to support student behavioral and mental health concerns.

  • On-Call and Committees: Participates in campus-wide administrators on-call rotation (2-3 weeks per year). Serves on Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) committee. Additional committee involvement may be assigned by the Executive Director of Residential Life.

  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Engages in and promotes Macalester's culture of diversity and inclusion, encompassing individuals of any heritage, identity, status or orientation. Examples of how this shows up in Residential Life specific work include Restorative Practices and Conflict Coaching models.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience in student residential life

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, or counseling preferred

  • Demonstrate the ability to be flexible and work with ambiguity.

  • Ability to create assessment tools and analyze data

  • Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite, computer, printer, copier, scanner.

  • Experience working with students and their families in navigating resources and pathways.

  • Develop project goals and/or learning outcomes. Meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks, communicate with appropriate staff. Evaluate outcomes.

  • Housing & Residential Life residential curriculum and/or living learning community experience

  • Ability to learn various data management systems and presentation software.

  • Ability to manage day to day office functions and assist others if needed.

  • Experience in assessing the level of student crisis and distressed behavior.

  • Demonstrates the commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity. Actively engages in learning and practicing principles of social justice and inclusion to increase individual capacity to support institutional changes that create and sustain a more welcoming and inclusive environment across the Macalester Community. Familiarity with residential collegiate living and learning programs, residential curricula.

Compensation:

The salary for this position will be $60,000 - $65,000, depending on experience.
