Position Summary:

The Student Development Unit of Student Affairs provides a wide variety of services aimed at developing the personal, social and academic life of each student and creates opportunities to become an integral part of a diverse community and grow through their common experiences. This unit is also responsible for management of several of the campus' revenue enterprises. The departments in this unit include Residential Education & Housing, Student Life, and Co-curricular and Leadership Development. These areas are leveraged to expand students' education (i.e. leadership development, student conduct, learning communities, joint initiatives with campus partners) and support the overarching mission of the College.

Reporting to the Director for Residential Education & Housing, the Associate Director of Residential Education oversees educational initiatives, assessment projects, student employment and supports residence directors in the day to day management of their residence halls.

The Associate Director is an integral part of the Department Leadership Team, which includes an associate director of housing & technology, another associate director of residential education, the director of residential education and housing and the business manager to create a comprehensive housing experience. This position will lead all efforts related to our co-curricular efforts, lead the implementation of a co-curricular experience for students, oversee operational aspects of openings and closings, manage our undergraduate staffing processes and supervise 2 residence directors, an operations coordinator and a coordinator of assessment & special projects.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Educational Initiatives-Administer a department-wide co-curricular residential education experience for 3,900 students who live in cohort-style housing. Incorporate programming philosophy through live-in staff. Coordinate residence hall programs and services to ensure quality education occurs in relevant learning goals and outcomes. Review programming data and produce reports, including analysis and recommendations for improvement of the educational program. Oversee Special Interest Housing Programs in designated residence halls. Serve as liaison with faculty and academic offices in coordination of Living-Learning environments, when relevant. Provide leadership to a residence area staff in the achievement of the curriculum goals and objectives of that area including staff leadership, programmatic assessment, and day-to-day operations. Participate in summer training, work with Housing Assignments to manage housing placements by Living-Learning environment, develop/revise materials and correspond with Living-Learning environments as needed. Utilize Roompact to facilitate the delivery of the curricular or educational program and to provide data related to residential student achievement of stated learning outcomes.

  • Supervision and Staff Development-Supervise and assess 4 professional staff (2 Residence Directors, an operations coordinator and a coordinator of assessment and special projects). Indirectly supervise all area staff, including student staff. Ensure that Affirmative Action procedures and goals are met in the hiring, training and evaluating of all staff. Work with other associate director of residential education to coordinate in-service training for area staff complementing department-wide training efforts, with particular attention to community development skills, residential curriculum and community issues. Participate in all departmental training and development programs and others as designated by the Director of Residence Education, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs or Vice President for Student Affairs.

  • Student Personnel Administration--Provide centralized program support to Residential Education, including, but not limited to: Coordinate the recruitment and selection of all undergraduate personnel comprising of nearly 200 staff members over five positions. Coordinate and implement training of undergraduate desk assistants. Monitor and ensure The College's Affirmative Action, EEO, Residential Education policies and procedures are adhered to, including conducting investigations of claims of violation of departmental ethics for student employees.

  • Additionally this person serves in a secondary on-call schedule with other members of the Leadership Team to support and advise the grads and professional staff on duty.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling or a related academic discipline appropriate to the promotion of student development.

  • 3-5 years residence life experience and/or skills related to staff supervision and training at the graduate and professional level.

  • Experience with supervising graduate or professional level staff.

  • Professional-level experience with crisis response and navigating after-hours emergencies.

  • An understanding of the student development theory and curriculum development in residence halls.

  • Understands and can set learning outcomes or can design and implement a residential curriculum or development of living-learning communities.

  • Professional-level experience with crisis response and navigating after-hours emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with setting and evaluating learning outcomes or designing and implementing a residential curriculum or development of living-learning communities.

  • Experience managing multiple priorities and/or projects.
