JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Senior Director, Sponsored Program Services, the Associate Director directs the day-to-day operations of the Faculty Shared Services unit that support the priorities and strategic objectives of the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) and University. This position will engage and collaborate with relevant stakeholders including faculty, department heads, and Deans, and will assist in leading the development and streamlining of business processes that improve the effectiveness, efficiency, education, and customer service of proposal development and award management for the Faculty Shared Services supported units. This position will interact with other University offices within the OVPR as well as other University stakeholders within the various academic units. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists Senior Director with operational and strategic oversight of Faculty Services Pre- and Post-Award units inclusive of processes, change management, and training activities.

  • Manages the day-to-day operational activities of the unit through the supervision and evaluation of Faculty Services staff; determines priorities and work assignments; leads and participates in hiring and provides oversight in the training of new hires.

  • Develops and maintains a proactive grant management environment, including establishing effective processes and efficient standard operating procedures, and manages key processes associated with proposal development and award management.

  • Cultivates and strengthens working relationships with supported unit leadership through routine meetings with Deans, Associate Deans, and senior-level administrators.

  • Responsible for reporting on quarterly metrics as well as establishing yearly billing rates and executing agreements with supported units.

  • Develop a mechanism to bring support to units that may have vacancies to fill whereby they can pay temporarily for Faculty Services support.

  • Address any potential service deficiencies quickly and effectively.

  • Lead effort to create a full suite of continually evolving process documentation.

  • Build/enhance tools for proposal development and award management as well as refine and enhance internal systems used by both Faculty Services Pre- and Post-Award units.

  • Serve as project manager on very large multi-disciplinary proposals.

  • Meet with Research Development Services regularly to further cultivate and grow support for institutional applications that support strategically important initiatives.

  • Assist with the development of programs and offerings of educational programs and information regarding grant and contract administration to departmental business office staff in collaboration with the SPS Curriculum and Training Coordinator.

  • Keep up to date on sponsor requirements, University policies, and state and federal regulations regarding the financial aspects of sponsored project administration.

  • Develop and manage employees and organize them into a high-performance team for providing efficient service delivery to both internal and external customers.

  • Facilitate the career development of staff through goal setting, cross-functional training, team building, and professional development.

  • Collaborate with other offices within the OVPR to establish guidelines and effective practices for managing grants and contracts.

  • Interact with external contacts such as program officials at funding agencies.

  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned by the Senior Director or AVP, Sponsored Programs as assigned.

  • Work closely with SPS staff at UConn Health for cross-campus and other related initiatives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in research administration, preferably in a public or university environment with a proven record of advanced skill.

  • Knowledgeable of federal regulations, sponsor guidelines, and the Federal Office of Management and Budget Uniform Guidance (2 C.F.R. Part 200) as they relate to sponsored program activity.

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

  • Experience with the development of large, multi-disciplinary proposals.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Ability to work effectively within tight timelines and deadline pressure.

  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team and between teams as well as with constituents external to the Office of the Vice President for Research.

  • Evidence of leadership, ability to direct the work of others, and a commitment to mentoring, coaching, and developing teams.

  • Considerable critical thinking, problem solving crisis management, and decision-making abilities.

  • Excellent computer skills that include a good working knowledge of electronic research systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree (e.g., Master's in Business, Public Health, or a related field).

  • Certified Research Administrator (CRA).

  • Supervisory experience managing a sponsored operations team or group.

  • Familiarity with and working knowledge of InfoEd software solution.

  • Familiarity with and working knowledge of Kuali Financial Systems.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, permanent position. With the expectation to travel on-site as needed, remote work modalities may be considered in accordance with the University's Alternate Work Arrangements policy and authorization.
