POSITION SUMMARY:

The Associate Director of Development supports and leads the development team in raising funds and driving philanthropy for Howard Brown. This position is responsible for managing the agency's annual fund, institutional giving, events, and individual giving teams, preparing proposals, reports, and other written materials for donors, and supporting planned and major giving efforts alongside the Vice President of External Relations. This person has excellent written and oral communications skills and mature judgement.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Increase Howard Brown's capacity for connection with individual donors and prospects by overseeing donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies

  • Work with the External Relations team and Vice President of External Relations to increase donor pipeline, including identifying new prospective donors and funders and prospective major donors from current donor pool

  • Partner with the Development team to maintain and improve data health and data structure based on best practices and industry trends; ensure regular cleanup and updates for database accuracy

  • Collaborate with the Communications team to organize and plan stakeholder mailings, e-appeals, and special mailings, tracking and reporting performance and analyzing for future improvements;

  • Lead team in organizing giving days such as Giving Tuesday, Give Out Day, and others

  • Manage a portfolio of 50-75 high-potential mid-level prospects and donors, preparing visit reports and follow-up correspondence, using Raiser's Edge database to track all moves

  • Create, update, and monitor policies and procedures for Raiser's Edge data entry, working with department staff as needed, and monitoring for compliance

  • Work closely with VP of External Relations to drive success of team

  • Collaborate with Development team and Howard Brown staff on stewardship initiatives for donors at all levels, including donor societies, Heartbeat, and Continuum

  • Improve usage of target analytics to better evaluate prospects and donors within the database, assessing profiling services within Raiser's Edge and implementing them to understand donors capacity and affinity to give

  • Oversee prospect research, ensuring that information provided to development officers is concise, uniform, and organized and meets the agency's fundraising strategies

  • Oversee successful fundraising, cultivation, and stewardship events with Development team, providing staff support as appropriate

  • Build relationships across the organization to drive storytelling and understanding of agency work

  • Other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Proven record of success in individual gift solicitation of at least five figures

  • Familiarity with direct mail and email solicitation practices

  • Proficiency with Raiser's Edge or other donor databases

  • Commitment to advancing the health and wellbeing of members of the LGBTQ community

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of six years' experience in nonprofit fundraising OR high school diploma and eight years comparable work experience

  • Mature judgement and respect for confidentiality required

  • Demonstrated ability to use discretion and independent judgment and/or independent action in evaluating situations and making decisions

  • Desire to collaborate as part of a team and flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Zoom

Preferred:

  • Previous experience with volunteer boards or committees

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Casual work environment

  • Shared office environment

  • Potential irregular hours and work from home hours

  • Occasional late or weekend meetings/events.
